Is Scion's FR-S Going To Be A Real Man's Car Or Just Another Pretender?

Is Scion's FR-S Going To Be A Real Man's Car Or Just Another Pretender?

A lot of car guys think the Toyota FT-86, now the Scion FR-S Concept and possibly a future Scion production vehicle, is the best-looking thing they’ve ever seen. When someone shows me a picture of an ugly child, I’ve learned to say, “What a sweet baby.” It’s not a lie and goes over much better than “What species is that?” or “Warn a guy before you show him something like that.”

The Toyota FR-S borrows heavily from racecars—and that’s what makes it ugly. Modern racecars are, for the most part, ugly. But they are ugly for a reason. Usually, that reason is to increase aerodynamic downforce, which allows the cars to go around corners at phenomenal speeds.

Depends how insecure you are as man.

Not matter how secure you are with your Manhood. 0-60 in the mid to high 7's isn't manly. That car at least needs a power to weight ratio of 12LBS/HP or lower in order to not be anything more than a harmless, tepid, good looking, chick car.

Going with the 0-60 in the mid to high 7's isn't manly logic. I'm assuming that you're saying all cars back in the day thats including mb, bmw, audi, porsche, lambo, or ferrari or whoever else you can think of were all wussies until now.

Or are you defining manliness according to the era you're living in as of now?

It's all relative. Or have you not heard of progression?

Our bodies adapt and adjust. What was considered as fast in the 1960's feels dog slow now. There was a time when anything that did 0-60 in under 10 seconds was considered to be fast. That isn't the case now. Can you tell me why?

I doubt we'll ever get to the point where 0-60 in 3 seconds would feel slow. But 0-60 in ten seconds was never really quick. We just thought it was because we didn't know any better back then.

Why is it so hard for some people to offer a valid counterpoint?

Instead they insult people like a child that got their feelings hurt. That tells me that they don’t really have a point at all and are content to call people names. Grow up dude.

I know that you are still smarting after the way I exposed you for what you are in that other post (you didn’t even have a reply, lol). But you need to get over it, lick your wounds and move on.

Constantly attacking someone without regard for what the actual discussion is, makes you look like a jerk. Enjoy!

Brembo,

No counter arguments? I guess we're all supposed to hold cars to 1960's standards?

Nah... You made a valid point. People should be comfortable driving whatever they want.

This car is definitely not ugly. It's mean looking and that's what makes it awesome.

Looks are subjective. My eye sees a symmetrical design with good proportions, they got the front and rear overhangs right, clean design with no gaudiness, attractive car.

As far as performance, the Subaru boxer turbo engines push heavier cars to 60 in the low 5's. It suspect that there will be a version with better performance available soon after introduction.

God what a stupid topic and stupid replies. Since when do 0-60 times define "manhood"? There are some really "manly" men out there that drive slow cars for the sole reason that they don't give a damn about cars at all. Big deal.

I like this car a lot, it look really sick........! And if they engine is not strong enough, I just add a supercharger and were good to go. Toyota you need to make this car and maintain most of the design cue and it should sale like hot cake.

Sell it for the rite price and let the tuners have at it. Hopefully TRD puts out some nice upgrades as well.

Toyota has been teasing of another small RWD sports coupe for how long now? Since I was nineteen? I will be 28 next week...

#OverIt. Wake me when there is one available in showrooms with ANY of their badges [Toyota/Scion (even Lexus)].

O think the 0-60 times are going to be in the 6 second range. I predict a little over 200 HP and say 160 LBS of torque. It should have great handling though. The turbo Subaru version should be quick but probably over 30 grand. This car I peg at 26 grand.

O-60 isn't the only measurement in a good car. If it was everyone would be driving mustang's vett's and other muscle cars. I want a car that does everything well. Balanced handling, great braking, low NVH, electronics looks sound and works as designed.

Your right knowitall1985 0-60 in the real world is not very meaningful. However I felt compelled to bring it up because there are so many that place such a high value on this statistic as a way to rate a vehicle's worth. I frankly do not.As long as an engine has some character, has good throttle response and can easily keep up with traffic that is more then sufficient for me. Based on the low ride height, the low egine center of gravity, the front midengine layout this car tentatively seems to promise fantastic handling. Hopefully the interior quality will be up to snuff do to the price contraints Scion intends to sell the car for.
