Toyota Says FT-86 Will Be Equipped With Subaru's 2.0 Liter Boxster Engine
In keeping enthusiasts on their toes, Toyota’s European division came out with a new release today on its upcoming FT-86 sports coupe. The Japanese automaker confirmed that the production version will go on sale in 2012 with power coming from by Subaru's new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine fitted with Toyota's D-4S technology.

The latter consists of direct injection combined with port injection.

Toyota just realeased what we have all known for the past 2 months now. We know they are using Scooby's 2.0DI engine...just show us the friggin numbers already. Geeze, I swear to god toyota, if you make this strip tease any slower I'm just gonna pay the bartender and leave.

What's the over under? My guess is 200hp +/-

lol 200hp! The 2.5L boxer produces 170hp, the FT86 is getting a smaller 2.0L version which produces 150hp. Now the current engines that use the D-4S produce about 84hp/liter. If we assume this will be a similar ratio, this will be about 168hp. lol. 200hp maybe with forced induction lol.

lol, but we are talking about Toyota and existing technologies. Face it, the base engine Toyota is using only produced 150hp. If they want to hit 100hp per liter they are going to have to do more then the D-4S system. They will also have to tune towards performance and away from fuel economy and emissions, and wasn't the whole boxer engine thrown into question when Toyota said it wasn't clean/efficient enough already? Looking at the numbers 200hp is an overestimate. Look closer to 170hp plus or minus a couple.

Hah, Id love to see your face when it comes out with >200 bhp.

BTW the EJ204 in JDM Legacy already makes 190 bhp without D4-S.

You think the Ft will come out with the same HP as the TC? Good luck.

I agree with you Joe. Honda is the master of high output small engines and it's 2012 Civic Si uses the latest 2.4-liter, 16-valve, DOHC i-VTEC engine - it produces 201 hp. How the heck is Toyota/Subie going to produce 200hp from its NA 2.0 liter engine?

I don't see it for this price range, this is not a Ferrari engine people, it's an everyday car being sold for $20K going against the Civic Si.

Hah, and you call yourself auto enthusiasts??

The 3S-GE in 1998 JDM Toyota Altezza makes 210 hp from 2.0L without even DI!

Shut the f**k up already!

lol your altezza also gets 25mpg. We are talking about a car that is being produced under this decades emission and fuel consumption standards. I never said it was impossible to do, but Toyota will never let this car come in under 30mpg when the more powerful Camaro hits 30mpg.

Emissions will be no problem at all. The fuel consumption too - the 25 mpg Altezza is a bit bigger and heavier sedan with engine tech from 12 years ago.

oh right, mileage and fuel consumption are no worry now a days, you can still tune as far towards performance and away from those goals as you want because Toyota's "technology" will fill in that gap, lol get real. This is the real world, not a fantasy magical world where Toyota can meet and exceed everyone's expectations.

Joe, where did you get that mpg number for the altezza? because both the rs200 and as200 get 30mpg on the highway.

Great looking car. It needs to be available with 2 engines. One to keep the price down for people who care more for looks than power. The other one should have about 300hp...

2500 lbs? Try 3300+ lbs.

Subaru isn't knowing for producing high revving engines, instead they have been using turbos for a while. Unless they modify the engine significantly to allow it to rev higher I see it making around 170 horsepower.

Again....you really think all this fuss for a car that makes the same hp as the current scion coupe? Think again.

I think they will get 200 HP out of the motor. To do it Toyota is going to in addition to the DI and Port Fuel injection most likely have different heads and cams then the standard Subaru engine.I don't think they can market this car with less then 200 HP. At 2700 LBS it would have very dissapointing performance with 170 HP.To get to the right power to weight ratio and a 0-60 in the mid 6 second range I'm guessing they will have make head and cam mods in addition to the the fuel injection. With 170 HP the car would have weigh in at 2500 Lbs to have reasonable performance.

No sense in quarreling with a Toyota hater. IMO hp will come out in the ballpark of 200 hp. Otherwise, its not a performance car in today's standards.
