Well it would have helped both Bertone and Alfa. The Coupe GT certainly outsold the Brera.Unfortunately at the time GM and Fiat were pretty intertwined and development of the premium platform to be shared originally by Saab and Alfa was too far along. Even though GM pulled Saab out of the deal Alfa really had no choice but to go ahead with it. This was the platform to replace both the 2 seat coupe and spider as well as the 156 sedan. The GT coupe was a carry over model developed from the 156 sedan platform as well as the Alfa 147.The GT coupe did relatively well for Alfa and with a convertable it would have done quite well. Then of course Fiat was bleeding money. I'm guessing that this was the time that Fiat was in tough negotiations with GM regarding the "Put" option to either buy them out or pay them off. When GM decided to pay them off it gave a life line to Fiat. It allowed them to develope the Punto, the grand Punto and the 500. This was vitally needed so that Fiat had product to sell. This turn around happened very quickly.Since the plan was to phase out the 156 platforms and derivatives Fiat was not going to spend money developing a convertable. However had Fiat not gotten involved with this heavy GM based premium platform I think they would have kept the 156 platform around longer and the convertable would have been built. It will be interesting to see what Fiat does with Alfa now. They cannot afford missed opportunities again.

Hate the trademark AF grille regardless, so anything they make is ugly.
