The 52 mpg BMW 5 Series - One Way to Improve BMW's CAFE
The BMW 520d is rated at 52 mpg (highway) in EU tests and 37 mpg city.

Christian Stampfer at The Diesel Driver drove the 520d from Munich to Frankfurt (apparently as part of alonger trip) and, while he didn't get 52 mpg at an average of 90 km/h, he did get an impressive 38 mpg overall.

The car isn't super fast but, with 0-100 km/h of 8.1 seconds, it's way faster than a typical hybrid.

I would love this car, it is way more efficient than my compact civic, I average 7.8L/100km.

8.1 seconds to 100 kph is more than adequate. I'd welcome such a car in the US. The mileage is impressive and the performance is more than adequate for my needs. The people who buy these cars care about fuel economy and luxury features. Raw performance isn't part of their "to have" list in these cars - and if they do want it, there's always a 535i etc.

Bring over the 520d and don't let BMW and Driver, whoops, I meant Car and Driver, test it. That magazine has become a joke.

Too bad this isn't EPA mileage. The EPA would drop that number under 40mpg.

No, this car cannot pass EPA emission standards even with EU diesel :)
To do so it will still need SCR and bigger particulate filters which will make it less fuel efficient.
Thats the curse of the diesel - it cannot be clean and efficient at the same time.
