Feds Secretly Planning To Leave A 62 MPG Cafe Legacy At Your Expense?

Quiet negotiations going on in Washington could change profoundly the nature of U.S. cars and trucks over the next 13 years, making more of them electrified and more costly.

New federal fuel economy and emissions rules took effect Jan. 1, requiring automakers to hit 35.5-mpg corporate average fuel economy by the 2016 model year.

In lieu of people are already buying cars that they cannot afford, changing cars frequently, the additional financial burden argument doesn't have much weight in my opinion. While it's true these alternative technologies will cost more to the individual buyer, the reduction on oil reliance (and cost of American blood in Middle East) will off set the higher cost to the individuals. Throw in the continual progression in technology for the US car industry to keep up with that same progression by Japanese and European car companies, I don't see downside as you do. But that's just my opinion.
