Agent009 Answers The Hybrid Threat At Home With A German Salvo Of His Own!
My dad always told me that you never enter the battle unprepared and if you ever get caught off guard then your best defense is a strong offense.  So when my dear wife brought home a Lexus RX400h to be her daily driver last month, I knew that I couldn’t leave THAT challenge unanswered for long.  If you reflect back a bit, you might remember that I too was in the market for a new vehicle to replace an aging Audi. Back then I challenged you for a non cookie cutter vehicle for under $40K and i waited for the feedback.

I took to heart those comments and researched quite a few vehicles over the last few months and started looking.  The chamber was loaded, the hammer was cocked and all I needed to do was pull the trigger.  Whatever I chose I knew it all boiled down to mix of comfort, style, value and uniqueness.  That final factor to me is important because I still believe the vehicle you drive is a reflection upon your personal taste. I simply can not stand walking past three separate clones of my vehicle in a parking lot before I get to mine.  I feel I can do better than that.

So after much debate and countless test drives I took the plunge.  My final choice for was a 2010 Volkswagen CC with only 16,000 miles.  Since the 2012 CC has been out for a while now, I bought this one two years into the depreciation cycle. The CC came standard with almost all of the prerequisites I had originally established but I did have to give up my coveted all wheel drive feature this time around.  Only time will tell just how much that one is going to hurt, but since there are so few 4 In Motion CCs out there I knew it would be a difficult proposition at best if I made it a top priority.

This has been a busy month, so I waited a week or so to drop the bomb on you and in the time frame I have to say I am still impressed with the vehicle as a whole.  The only thing I can see changing is adding a direct iPod interface which this vehicle was not originally equipped with and maybe an ECU tweak to take maximum advantage of the turbo 2 liter full potential a bit further down the road.

So take a look give me your best shot!

BTW:  With two tanks down the CC is averaging in mixed driving just over 31 MPG and the RX400h in daily driving is sitting in the mid 20’s.  Yes if I baby the RX I can pick up the car pool from school and get to the house without kicking on the gas engine, but in the real world normal people don’t drive that way, and neither does my dear wife.

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Not yet, but it does irk me to pull up behind an exact copy of my car at a light.

I guess I still yearn for the days when you could have a individual and unique vehicle. Just too many cars these days are so generic.

Beautiful car. The Passat CC is quite possibly the most elegant "4-Door-Coupe" on the market today. I like it much better than some of its more expensive (a class above) rivals.

Excellent choice, would have one myself if I didn't need a car for utility purposes.

Beautiful car and color. Would have opted for the 6 myself. Don't like turbo fours and their lag.

With the VW 2 liter the boost kicks in around 1500 RPM so in normal driving the lag isn't noticeable. It just feels like a V6.

I did consider a Mini Cooper Clubman S and that was a different animal. No low-end oomph, but really nice one it was in the powerband.

Why does a car that looks so nice (the Passat CC) have to perform like a Camry? It's a nice car, but it’s nothing more than a German Camry. Now they are going to take it even further down Appliance'ville and make a hybrid version. YAWN!!!!!

Just a general Comparison of the "Camry" and the CC from Car and Driver.
The only thing the Camry came close was gas mileage with a 1 MPG observed difference.

2010 Toyota Camry 2.4 liter

C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 8.1 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 23.5 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 16.4 sec @ 86 mph
Top speed (governor limited): 130 mph
Braking, 70–0 mph: 182 ft
Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad: 0.79 g

FUEL ECONOMY:
EPA city/highway driving: 22/32 mpg
C/D observed: 26 mpg

2009 Volkswagen CC 2.0T
C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 7.0 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 18.0 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 15.3 sec @ 92 mph
Top speed (governor limited): 127 mph
Braking, 70–0 mph: 178 ft
Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad*: 0.83 g

FUEL ECONOMY:
EPA city/highway driving: 19/29 mpg
C/D observed: 25 mpg

009 - Nice ride. For some reasons I think that VW's look really good in white. Wouldn't say that about too many cars, but for the VW I think it wears the color well. Will be interesting to see what the next gen CC looks like given how bland the upcoming Passat is.

You know this is the first white vehicle I have ever had in 35 years of driving... Not sure how that one got a way from me.

Nice. Beautiful car. If I cared much for VW, that would be the car I would pick as well.

Have to say, the CC looks really great. Especially the wheels; not a fan of the taillights though.

Nice ride 009!

Looks great in white and wheels are sharp.

But I remember your house only having two front columns not four ;)

We added a couple of columns to keep up with my buddy Deon Sanders. I think he has 8 now in front of his house.

Now If I can just find room to squeeze in a tennis court, football field, batting cage, basketball court and 3 lane bowling alley, we can call it even.

My brother-in-law drives one and I like its appearance as well as its performance (but then, I'm not a "race car driver" type).

009 - I thought you are anti-hybrid? Or is this just a German hybrid vs Japanese hybrid thing?

Not a fan of the Hybrid logic. However mama wanted one, and mama gets what she wants. Besides it is an excellent way to literally put my money where my mouth is and get a chance to live with the devil (the hybrid not the spouse).

I now have a real world example to live with for a few years. I guess I can't think of a better way to validate or debunk the whole thing.

I have no doubt the Hybrid can deliver exceptional mileage when driven gently. But what is it like in the real world with real driving conditions?

Dear Agent009. Congratulation for your new car. Basically the comfort equipments coming form Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge. These are commercial vehicle - designed for good transport: meat, wood, trash...
http://www.volkswagen-nutzfahrzeuge.de/de/de/fahrzeuge/transporter/Kastenwagen/de_highlights/ergonomie.html

When you change your job, the WV Transporter instruments and comfort will be familiar for you.

The vehicle chassis is almost same with Skoda Superb. The tschech engineers made a perfect and cost efficient job for VW.

Beside this, I never pay a luxury price for the car using an equipment of Vans and ordinary cars. You should bargain MORE for the Passat CC.

Feature per feature I believe the CC is competitive. I could easily spend far more for the competition and get less.

Nice ride! Fine colour too! Wheels looking good.
Congratulations :)

But I have a question... how are the seats? I remember when I sat in one in the car show it almost split my back in half! The seats were too stiff and uncomfy. Or maybe I just wasn't used to them.

P.s, If I were you, I'd also instal factory HIDs on those headlights.

Seats are typically German style firm. But I have found you can adjust them to a specific comfort level pretty easily. I haven't found them to be an issue at all.

009 - appreciate your answering my query and fair enough. At least you're putting in the effort (not to mention the money) to see the hybrid in real world action as opposed to those that just protest without having actual experience.

My first post! Googling news of the new cc (just bought a 2012) and came across your blog. Looks just like my 2012, color, trim and all. Great find. I love mine too. Coming out of an '08 Infiniti g35S, I miss the pick up, but where the Infiniti lacks (comfort, gas mileage, paint quality) this VW picks it up and runs with it! Freeway cruising at 85 mph with the tach at 2700 rpm?! Pleasantly surprised and very happy with my cc. Great job finding a great car 009.
