Feds Step Away From Letter Grades On EPA Stickers Because ABC's Are Too Hard To Understand
The Obama administration has scrapped a proposal to assign new passenger cars a letter grade from A to D based on their fuel efficiency, according to people familiar with the matter.

The administration was considering the letter grades as part of a revamp of the familiar price-and-mileage labels affixed to new cars.

Instead, the updated labels, expected to be unveiled by Obama officials next week, will include more information designed to help consumers judge a car's projected gasoline costs and its emissions. But they won't include letter grades assigned by regulators, people familiar with the proposal said.

Did you even read this? It said the Obama administration scrapped the plan. Do you guys believe that he came up with this idea? It was one of three ideas proposed by a committee of so-called experts.

I'm guessing the idea behind it is that saying a car gets 30mpg in the city is potentially misleading and short on information. Which city and driven in what manner? If the idle time is too short or long, it will distort the figures for cars with stop-start technology versus those that don't. What if the fuel source is not gasoline, how do you get an equivalent and compare cars? MPG is so fuzzy, it might as well be a letter grade.

If consumer is concerned about gas mileage and cost of driving, why not lookup average mpg information on the official website and then do some simple math? How difficult is that?

Cuba actually has a better public school system than the United States. Ironically most of our best Universities are training smarter foreign students because Americans are not strong enough to get in the Ivy League schools. The average American only retains a 7th grade level of education and can barely handle fractions and percentages or calculate a 20% tip. So grading cars is their way of treating us like we are really are, deaf, dumb, stupid and sheapish fools. Why do you think you can deduct 100% of your car's lease if you own a business and the car costs more than $49,500 dollars and use it for your business? So the politicians can write off their Mercedes S classes and Escalades!

A letter grade? Not what I would do, I would stick to MPG, exept I would revise EPA's un realistic MPG ratings, I would get a handful of testers, soccer moms... to test real world mpg, that would beat a-d ratings.
