New BMW turbocharged engine

Here is a collection of pictures of the 3.0 liter turbocharged engine in the E92 335 Coupe coming September '06. It is rated at 300HP and 300lb-ft of torque, most of which is available from 1400-5300 rpm. It makes as much power as a V8 and weighs much less. I'm told that this engine, plus a 328 version of the current Valvetronic series, will replace the E90 3.0L Valvetronic NG6 engines in the E90 325 and 330.

Ok, i don't believe 'chewy' on what he/she is claiming. Did Audi actually make the firs turbo engine?

Who made the first production turbo engine?

BMW had turbo engines before Audi even existed.

I think a BMW with a blow-off valve( assuming ppl will add it ) won't sound right. Perhaps a supercharge like MB that is fine. Then again, MB does not make stick maybe Superchargers are better for their engines performance.

Hmmmmm, so when will BMW copy the VW "Twin Charger" application? Seems like the next logical step, since they have just verified the Turbocharger as a valid performance option. (what a revelation that must have been!)

Soon they may start figuring out a Diesel can be a performance engine too. With that thought process it sounds like they would be ready to fall in line under the VW/Audi banner.

To bad the BMW AWD variants are not quite there yet, I have yet seen a single BMW come out on top of a test yet. To me that is suprising because the rear wheel versions really do rock.

However, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So thank you BMW for showing me who the true leader really is.

fine you can have the turbocharger, when you admit that the entire Audi lineup (a4, a6, a8) are copied from BMW's 3, 5 and 7. Not to mention the TT from the z3, q7 from x5, and s/RS line from BMW's M line.

So let's talk leader now buddy

Yes, it says that Audi's 2.0 liter turbocharged AND direct injected engine (the same technology as the BMW engine above) is the engine of the year.

Getting cocky aren't you my friend? Do you even know if it is a "great" engine. BTW, VW (Bugatti) has a 8.0 liter turbo engine with 1,000 hp, BMW's 3.0 liter turbo is nothing more than a fetus when the two are compared. You lose once again.

BMW used Turbos since the late 60s.

The was a car called the 2002 TIK (Injection Turbo Charged in german) witch helped BMW win the European Touring Car Championship.

Because it too much for the competition it was banned.

Later in 1972/73 the steet legal version was produced, it was called the 2002 Turbo.

This was before the Porsche 930 (911 Turbo) and the Saab Turbo.

The TIK engine was further developed to into the the Formula 2 and later Formula 1 succes story.

After the 2002 Turbo ceased production, petrol turbo charged engines were used by BMW only on motorsport,
however production diesel turbos were used to this day.

In 1998 a turbo diesel won the 24 h of Nurburgring, thus thus the BMW 320 becomed the first diesel car to win a race.

So I sorry Audi fans, BMW used turbos way before Audi.

Also there is no such thing as a 100% lag free turbo only engine.

The only solution is VWs brilliant
turbo + supercharger (+ injection) 1.3 TSI.

Also Audi only gets from VW the Golf platform used on the A3 and TT, the rest are Audi platforms including the Q7/Tuareg/Cayenne.

Someone try to find me an article written about ANY 2002 or later Audi that has a cheap, plasticky, ergonomically dysfunctional interior or has the worst fit and finish among its competitors in the respective test.

I think we know who sets the benchmark in interior design. It's VW/Audi kids...

Yes that is right BMW and Mercedes-Benz are INFERIOR to Audi when it comes to interior design.

BMW & MB the world's two most prestigious luxury brand are INFERIOR to a car made, "FOR THE PEOPLE!"

MY OH MY.....what a discovery!

Audi is the best when it comes to interior design. If you don't want to accept it, find me some evidence regarding what I asked for above.

Until then BMW and MB are inferior to Audi when it comes to interior design

A tip for you that maybe searching:(BMW & MB always will be inferior in interior design because no such article exists!)

audi's interiors are very well made and ergonomic...but some people love m-b's interiors due to copious amounts of wood.

When will these new BMW engines be available for the sedan? And what is the official engine numbering, 328i or 335i? Just wondering since this is the first time I've seen a turbo recently on BMWs.

Nut of the German variety, I will give it to you that BMWs and MBs of the past do not compare to Audi interiors of the same year, aka, 2005 BMW 330i to 2005 Audi A4, or, even 2006 MB C350 to 2002 Audi A4!... But, if there is anything we have learned from the 2007 CL, it is that MB has really stepped up its game! Does anybody else find the CL600 interior absolutely heavenly? I know I do. This car is just friggin perfect.

Perfect.

Sigh.

The colour combination and layout is pure automotive sex! I have never seen a car recently that has provoked such genuine intrigue from me.

I promised my mother that I would find myself a nice Russian girl. Alas, I have fallen in love with a German. A car. A car named 2007 CL.

Many of you know that I am not the BIGGEST fan of the 6er, however the exterior has "grown" on me. You know, as Chris Bangle has said, it does depend on what colour his cars are in for you to appreciate them for what they are. On a sidenote, the e90 does not apply. No matter what, it looks boring and like crap. Moving along, the interior of the 6-series is what really moves me. The curves are modern and sporting, yet tastefully done to be classic designs. I find this interior very refreshing. A typical BMW interior has a very spacious feel about it (minus the 5 series which has a very annoyingly abstract look to it regarding the door panels).

As you can see from these pictures, it is hard to argue that the 650ci looks bad at all here. BMW can compete with Audi in terms of interior design.

I do enjoy Audi interiors and truly admire them in their laidback, traditional, and German-cool style. Saying that Audi interior design is "superior" (the opposite of inferior which you called BMW and MB) is being just a tad ignorant. Audi offers a completely different style. Unless everyone in the world was supposed to have the exact same tasteor opinion as you, you would be right. Au

If you think BMW's are unreliable now, imagine how often the car's gonna be in the shop with a turbo engine!!!!!!

The only properly build turbo engine in my opinion was the MKIV Toyota Supra motor. The Twin-Turbo inline 6 mated to the Getrag transmission. It was built extremely well and strong which explains why there are people pushing 500hp out of them.

Unfortuntely because of the over-engineering of the motor, Toyota couldn't make money from the car.

First of all the Auto Union existed waay before any BMW and it competed head to head with MB. Later it changed it's name to Audi and that name has stayed.

Second, the argument is not who made the first turbo. The argument is that Audi has long adopted the turbo and AWD and BMW has long claimed that naturally aspirated and FWD are superior. Now, BMW is eating it's own words. Who is following who.

It is better to lead not follow. Audi talks with actions, not stupid print ads that are completely and uterly irrelevant for which only low IQ people can fall for.

With Audi reliability going aup and up there is no draw backs to owning an Audi. Even with the extra weight from AWD it is a better car than summer-only BMWs. When Audi masters the application of lighter materials to better balance weight distribution it will never look back to ANYONE as AWD has time and time again shown in competitive racing onroad AND off that it is superior to RWD.

To janos2769:

Learn some history before you post non-sense.

1.
* Auto Union was formed in 1932 by the merger of DKW (who owned Audi), Wanderer and Horch.

* The 4 circles represent the 4 brands.

* The Audi (brand) is older then BMW, but BMW AG as well as BMWs automotive division is older then Auto Union.

2.
* BMW used turbos BEFORE Audi.

* In 1969 BMW had the 2002 TIK (Turbo Charger & Injection)witch gave BMW the second European Touring Car Championship.

* Between 1972 and 1973 the street legal version of the TIK was created, it was called the 2002 Turbo.

* The M10 turbocharged engine was improved by BMW Motorsport winning 6 formula 2 title and the the Formula 1 World Championship in 1983.

* There was also the 320 Turbo raced in the IMSA series.

* While after 1973 there were no production petrol turbochared cars, BMW succefully used Turbos on its diesel engines.

* In 1998 the 320D (turbo diesel) was the diesel car to win a race, the 24 H of Nurburgring.

BMW has no choice but to revert to TC car because this is probably the only way they can make the next generation of M3 lighter and hopefully faster than the RS4.

I wont be surprise that BMW M cars will have AWD system in the near future.

We have tested the 335 HPi engine and we couldn't detect any turbo lag.
The two turbo's change shape when the RPM,s get higher.
Geometric turbo's.
The torque flow is so unbelieveble smooth!

BMW didn,t use turbo's before because the fuel consumption would go up!
But now with the High Precision Injection (HPI) they can control the fuel injection perfectly so you get more power and less fuel consumption!!
This new engine will win a lot of awards!

Perfect German engineering!!

By the way, I've heard the M-devision is working on a new engine for the legendary M1!
-V12
-about 800+ BHP
-no turbo!!!
-Able to rev up to almost 10.000 RPM

M are the masters!

The first production turbocharged automobile engines came from General Motors. The A-body Oldsmobile Cutlass Jetfire and Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder were both fitted with turbochargers in 1962. The Oldsmobile is often recognized as the first, since it came out a few months earlier than the Corvair. Its Turbo Jetfire was a 215 in³ (3.5 L) V8, while the Corvair engine was either a 145 in³ (2.3 L)(1962-63) or a 164 in³ (2.7 L) (1964-66) flat-6. Both of these engines were abandoned within a few years, and GM's next turbo engine came more than ten years later.

Offenhauser's turbocharged engines returned to Indianapolis in 1966, with victories coming in 1968. The Offy turbo peaked at over 1,000 hp in 1973, while Porsche dominated the Can-Am series with a 1100 hp 917/30. Turbocharged cars dominated the Le Mans between 1976 and 1994.

BMW led the resurgence of the automobile turbo with the 1973 2002 Turbo, with Porsche following with the 911 Turbo, introduced at the 1974 Paris Motor Show. Buick was the first GM division to bring back the turbo, in the 1978 Buick Regal, followed by the famed Mercedes-Benz 300D and Saab 99 in 1978. The worlds first production turbodiesel automobile was also introduced in 1978 by Peugeot with the launch of the Peugeot 604 turbodiesel.

Renault however give another step and istalled a turbocharger to the smallest and lightest car they had, the R5, making it the first Supermini automobile with a turbocharger. This, combined with an incredible lightweight, gave the car about 230bhp (an exorbitant power for 1400cc) and reach the level of the incredibly fast Ferrari 308. Pontiac also introduced a turbo in 1980 and Volvo Cars followed in 1981.

In Formula 1, in the so called "Turbo Era" of 1977 until 1989, engines with a capacity of 1500 cc could achieve anywhere from 1000 to 1500 hp (746 to 1119 kW) (Renault, Honda, BMW). Renault was the first manufacturer to apply turbo technology in the F1 field, in 1977. The project's high cost was compensated for by its performance, and led to other engine manufacturers following suit. The Turbo-charged engines took over the F1 field and ended the Ford Cosworth DFV era in the mid 1980s.
