BMW Scrambling To Rethink 5 Series Wagon As Gran Turismo Sales Flounder
According to Automotive News, BMW of North America has been disappointed by the sales of the 5 Series Gran Turismo. Introduced last year as a replacement for the new 5 Series Wagon, the 5 GT has been one of the most criticized products in the past years.

With a design idea starting from inside the vehicle, the exterior was a combination between a crossover, like the X6, and a sports wagon. Based on initial studies conducted by BMW, the results showed that the 5 Series GT is a vehicle appealing to those that are looking for luxury, space and performance, but are not willing to spend money on a full 7 Series nor any SAV models.

Maybe globally. This article is just about the US market.

World-Wide Sales are good. Just the US market is below expectations. Not surprising really.

They were trying to be positive but in bottom of their hearts, they knew that the 5GT was and car for Oldies with a very comfortable and extraordinarily well executed interior but horrible exterior..Fail. Almost the same history for R class, but difference is that MB knew that R class would be a a low volume car so it will survive longer than the dying 5GT. and Unborn 3GT (it the profile is to high , It will be other failure , so IF they do other GT, most likely it will be the 4 series. BMW are quick learners and they will have move their butts with the grand coupe if they do not want to be dethrone by Audi which have better looking cars IMO.

The 535xi wagon with 6MT was one of my favorite cargo carriers. They should bring it back. The 5GT was the answer to a question nobody asked.

Awkward doesn't always sell well. Not to mention the odd proportions that the thing has. What did they expect? That thing is a doofus.

BMW is loosing its focus. What about the lithe, ultimate driving machine? Thest GT's, X6's etc. are obese products not aligned with the values that make BMW, BMW. Lets just hope the new 3-series doesnt gain 100's of pounds like the 5-series did. While I appreciate the new 5-series being a nice evolution of the E39, it nevertheless is a very different car not in keeping with it's heritage and differentiation.

I'm still saying no one does hatchback sedans better than Citroen, but that's just my opinion. As far as the 5GT, talk about unpleasant turn of events. Not only is an ugly car not selling as well as BMW fans and BMW had hoped for, but the fact that it's eating into the 7 series is just surprising. I personally regard the S higher than the 7 as an executive sedan but to have the 7 losing sales to the 5GT cousin, well, that's just an insult to the 7. As for the 5 wagon, I agree it's world better than the 5GT, but the article points out how the 5 Wagon is not doing as well as the MB E wagon, and I think historical sales record between the 2 will show the same pattern. I wouldn't necessarily say this is because the E wagon is better, I just think people that like wagon is not the typical BMW demographic (performance oriented, younger).

I'm curious whether Audi will experience the same with their A7 (or A6, I'm confused between the two).

Don't confuse the A7 with the 5GT. The A7 is low and wide with a very aggressive stance.

Not a shock that this monstrosity hasn't been selling. Honestly who would buy this or an x6?

I'm not surprised at all, the 5GT is not an attractive vehicle in my eyes. I would own a 5-series touring in the blink of an eye, but I wouldn't even consider the 5GT. I don't know what BMW was thinking, the 5-series touring is a beautiful car.
