SPIED: We HEAR The Next-Gen Porsche 911 For The FIRST Time
Although we have seen plenty of spy photographs of the upcoming 911 from Porsche, there is one very critical aspect we haven't really been able to explore, sound. Of course sound is a very important aspect of any sports car but particularly for a Porsche since the infamous flat six has a unique tone.

When you're in a Porsche 911, you want to know you're in a 911. This is similar to BMW's inline six-cylinder motor, which reminds you everytime you bounce the revs off 3,000 rpm you're in a Bavarian auto. Or how about a vintage Ferrari V12 -- there's no replacing these notes.

Thanks to some spies that were handy with a video camera, we now hear the Porsche 991 for the first time in full tilt.

Looking a bit Panamera-inspired from the front, the 991 is clearly longer and lower than the outgoing 997. This should allow for Porsche to move the rear-mounted engine further up so the car is better balanced.

Teamspeed.com spies have sent this video from today’s ring testing of the next generation Porsche 911, internally called type 991.

The next-generation Porsche 911 is 56mm longer and the roof line is 11mm lower compared to the current model. The 345bhp 3.4 liter boxer engine propels the vehicle from zero to 100km/h in less than five seconds up to a top speed of 180mph. KERS – Kinetic Energy Recovery System – is standard and will be part of the entire model range...

there was some body roll. You don't want zero, if you have absolutely no give in corners you're more prone to suddenly losing control at the limit as the inside wheels lift.

it ain't that difficult to tell a few differences if you're not completely blind. a longer wheelbase and closer to mid engine cos of the shorter overhangs. it doesn't look wider to you? have you ever seen a 997?

but you're right: i can't see if it's lighter and i didn't hear the KERS.

@ 100octane, I fully agree with you. The differences are subtle but you still can see them. For the lack of better words, I would say that it does seems to have a more "mature" GT feel to it.

I own and Cayman S ('09) and Cayenne ('11) and have been waiting for the re-launch of the 911. I truly hope the interior is inspired and will draft off of the Panamera/Cayenne, yet has features (in addition to KERS) that are unique to this model. the Carrera is "THE" signature Porsche model and must, in my humble opinion and given the brand extensions that have occurred, deliver some unique and authentic features that can only be found in the 911. My only complaint is the fact the U.S.A. is relegated to receiving this vehicle, I am guessing, three to six months behind the European launch. My comment has nothing to do with American pride, but the reality that launching high performance (sports cars) vehicles in one of Porsche's largest markets in October/November makes little sense (especially given the economic reality that three of our largest GDP cities are in cold weather climates)...
