RUMOR: BMW Considering Building An M1 To Go Against Likes Of Audi R8
This rumor has been floating around for quite sometime now, probably around five years. However, here we go again.

According to BMW insider, Scott26, BMW is thinking about building an R8 competitor dubbed the M-One. One thing to keep in mind is that the project is in its infancy, there is suppose to be a sketch but there are no details on powerplants or anything else for that matter.

Now before we speculate any further, I'll just end it right there. With that said, take a look at the further details down below.

We want to know, though: is this what you've been waiting for?

File this under "Too Good To Be True" for now. If you ask 10 BMW enthusiasts what fantasy car they want BMW to make happen, nine probably will say 'A real supercar like the original M1 was.'

If the restless BMW insider SCOTT26 is to be believed, he has told us that BMW is considering exactly that. Internally dubbed "M-One," this project is said to be at a very early stage, meaning it only exists as a sketch so far. No surprise then that there aren't any technical details yet. However, a logical powerplant would be the use of the engine of the upcoming F30 M3, as well as its underpinnings and platform. Scott stresses that the M-One would be an unique M car, meaning it would not be based on any particular BMW AG model. Visually we'd expect something along the lines of the M1 Hommage. Using know-how from BMW i, this car would make extensive use of carbon fiber. Scott goes on to say that the car won't debut before 2015 *IF* it gets approved for production...

Please build the M1. Can we get a petition together and send it to BMW? The M1 was the best BMW and one of the best cars ever.

Why not go after Lambo or Ferrari? Guess they know better.

Rumor? If and that is a big "if" BMW AG is working on an exotic car, then it may be around two years away +/-. The board of directors meets every year at the BMW track in Spain to evaluate current products and potential future products. So around spring 2007 the car may have got the go ahead to proceed to a feasbility study and renderings of what it could look like. BMW is not considering building it, since their cars have such a long gestation period, it may be out by 2013. So the car is coming out or it could be a dead project from 2007 or 2008 as their cars generally have a seven year gestation period from idea stage to showroom. So with that timeline it may possibly not be a rumor that has been flying around for 5 years or so, just under tight wraps. The M1 homage was a concept that could have design cues for a future car. They also put out one or two concepts leading up to a production model. This car has not been seen so it may pop up in a auto show in the 18 months!

They have confirmed a working concept named M One (meaning first of it's kind)as a title for a future car that is due around in 2013. This may very well be the car. The downside is BMW's typically don't do very well over $100,000. And these kind of exotic rides are usually north of $150,000 and $200,000 is another threshold as well. The Gallardo was 3 years old when they debated the idea and the F430 was fairly new as well so guessing what Ferrari and Lamborghini would have out in 2013 would be easy to do by checking with suppliers for those two cars. So I would guess that BMW would go it's own way like usual which means it's own interpretation of an exotic car. We will see.

I used to love BMW's before they got hyped up too much. I remember the M1 was my absolute favorite then. They need to bring it back.
