EPA Shows Off New Car Economy Window Stickers

EPA Shows Off New Car Economy Window Stickers
The Obama administration unveiled revamped fuel economy labels today — including new ratings for electric vehicles — but dropped a proposal to assign "A+" through "D" grades for vehicle efficiency.

The decision — announced this morning by the administration — is a win for automakers that have lobbied against the letter grades, worried that it would have deterred customers from buying larger vehicles that got poor grades.

This is what I can never understand: how can they estimate the EXACT (down to a dollar) annual fuel cost if the price of fuel fluctuates almost daily AND prices vary a lot between some states? They can even calculate precisely what you'll spend over the next 5 years! Remember 4-5 years ago when price of fuel was twice cheaper than it is now?

I think it's silly to expect exact numbers. The number they give is obviously a rough average. It's the difference between vehicles that you are comparing anyway, not the actual vehicle. 99.9% of buyers won't care if that number is a few dollars out or a few hundred out. These numbers allow consumers to quickly factor in a fuel cost when buying a new vehicle so they can make a more informed decision.

The bottom of the label states the assumptions used: Average car gets 22mpg, mileage per year: 15000, $3.00 per gallon gasoline (or equivalent)

I don't like the fact it says $ more compared to average new vehicle. This is misleading since there is no base line. It would be better if it listed $more compared to similar class vehicle. Or give the dollar amount the car will consume @ say 3.80 per gallon

The average this year according to the EPA is 22mpg, it says that on the sticker. I think a class by class comparison would be misleading, someone might end up buying a hybrid suv or truck and think it gets better fuel economy then a compact car.

This label reflects the stupidity of the DoT.
