TRUE Classic or OVERRATED Junk? Was The Mark II Toyota Supra All It Was Cranked Up To Be?
So if you haven't noticed, around this place we tend to have reoccurring segments that try to give the users a bit of a feeling of what we think of the automotive world. In addition, we try to have a bit of fun.

What's the point if we're not all having some fun in this, right? Remember, life's meant for us to live.

Before I get all philosophical though, let's keep this train on the right track.

We've decided we want to introduce a new segment dubbed "TRUE Classic or OVERRATED Junk." Our first car?

The Mark II Toyota Supra. Carrying the name "Supra" means it instantly won the hearts of many Toyotaphiles; however, it was also made in that horrible period of time when cars were simply bad.

With that said, where does that leave the Mark II Supra? Is it a TRUE Classic or an OVERRATED piece of junk?

Actually, the gen 2 Supra was a great GT car for the mid-80's. It's primary competition was the first-gen 300ZX ( which was a real dog). The first year of it had questionable styling, but the 1985 turned out to be nice for the time period. It had nice, 8-way adjustable seats, a much better stance, silent idle, rock solid reliability, relatively strong acceleration, great cruising manners, strong breaks and nice tech bits.

It wasn't perfect, however. It was bloated, had tight rear legroom (which GT car didn't) a weak sound system, some quirky styling areas, and the lower-end models looked like they were going to fall off of their own tiny, cheesy wheels/tires.

But, the fully loaded model was nice, with its integrated spoiler, bigger wheels and fatter tires.

How about the Gen 3 Supra Turbo? That was a great one as well that had a huge jump in interior quality and an awesome dash. It was still bloated though.

Looking forward to the next one to comment on....

I enjoyed your write up of this car, but am not sure of your assessment of the '84+ 300zx being a dog. We are comparing the Supra, not the Celica, therefore you have to consider the top of the line "z" as well. The z was offered with a turbo and was significantly quicker as it held a 40 horsepower advantage over the Supra (160hp vs. 200hp). This equates into at minimum of a second faster 0-60 time, in defense of it being a dog. Back in 1984-5, I would have picked the turbo z over the Supra. Today would prefer to own that Supra over the z.

Agreed... biggs. Awesome car, little bit of legal controversy at the time with the engine and its possibly reverse engineered BMW inline 6.

Classic! And I'm not beign sarcastic. As a child the Supra was one of the hottest cars out. How things have changed over at toyota. There was a time when they built more than just appliances.

Not overrated, most supra fans I know would rather get 90's model supra's. The 80's was a terrible decade for most auto manufacturers. The only 80's car I could ever consider owning are the Buick GNX, or the Esprit.

It was not a junk car. First off when built Toyota was not the largest car company with quality control problems and complaints about unintended acceleration issues. It was reliable and it had performance and handling that was competative in the 80's. It was kind of inbetween the performance of the softer Z car and RX7 as well has the Mitsubishi Starion(maybe that car came out later). If you say it was junk then you'd have to say al 80's cars were junk.I'm going with classic because I happen to like it's sharp edge styling.
