EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: FaceBook, Twitter And Web Radio Streaming In Your BMW? First Screen Shots Of BMW Apps In Action On The 335d
As you know, I pulled the trigger on another car (2011 BMW 335d M-Sport) and my photos and review have garnered alot of attention across the web.

But one of the cool features I didn't get to talk about or show in my quick review and photo gallery was the new "BMW Apps" option in action.

It's a $250 option on the 2011 3-series that uses the ConnectedDrive feature to give you access to FaceBook, Twitter, Web Radio Streaming and other apps to come.

It works in tandem with the free BMW Connected iPhone app. and once your iPhone is connected via the usb cable it allows you to get Facebook and Twitter updates on the nav screen automatically in the time increment you choose.

It also allows you to update FB or Twitter with some contextual messages it chooses depending on what you are doing like "It's 68 degrees and I'm listening to...".

You can also 'Like' your friends FB posts through the iDrive.

By the way, who WOULDN'T 'Like' anything from 001's FB friend Carey Torrice? ;)

Plus it lets you stream web audio which I though would suck but it's really cool.

It's like having a world band radio in the car with unlimited stations all with great reception!

I wish the system gave more capabilities like build a library of your own canned messages to post on FB/Twitter but I'm sure they will add features.

Check out these first screen shots of it in action.

I think you'll be impressed.

Agent 00B certainly was!

Are you supposed to or allowed to do this while driving? I think this is worse than watching a movie on your small satnav screen and driving simultaneously.

Very nice but BMW needs to realize that not everyone has an iPhone. I prefer Android. Which is light years ahead of iOS.

"I wish the system gave more capabilities like build a library of your own canned messages to post on FB/Twitter but I'm sure they will add features."

Actually, the BMW Connected app already offers this feature. Using version 1.5.1 or later directly on the iPhone (not when attached to the car), go to BMW Apps -> Twitter -or- Facebook -> Posts -> Edit -> + and then simply type out your custom posts, using a variety of variables available by clicking the 'variable' button. Next time you connect to the car, your custom post will show up automatically filled with the variable data you selected, ready to be posted with one click.

While you're at it, try the Pandora integration! It works with the latest version of the Pandora iPhone App.

Cool indeed 001. Nice ride. I'd love to hear your detailed comparison of the 335d versus the 550i. I realize they are different cars, but I'm sure there are some spies out there considering each and trying to figure out which one to get.

As for the Connected Drive tech stuff, I think it is nice , but I'd really like to have the remote status and remote start capabilities like OnStar equipped cars now have. Yes, it is a totally different architecture, but still a fantastic feature set. Like many, I would assume the German automakers would scoff at that tech, but then again, I would have thought American and Asian brands would have beat the Germans to high grade iPhone/iPod integration. But I was (somewhat) wrong.

Enjoy the new ride...
