Mazda Calls It Quits And Will No Longer Produce Cars In US
Mazda Motor Corp. plans to leave its joint venture with Ford Motor Co. and stop building cars in the U.S., the Nikkei financial daily reported today.

Mazda and Ford operate the AutoAlliance International plant in Michigan as a 50-50 partnership. Citing unnamed company sources, the Nikkei said Mazda is considering selling its stake to Ford as the Japanese automaker tries to restructure its global production.

Mazda cars sold in the U.S. will be shipped from Japan and Mexico starting around 2013, according to the Nikkei.

Oh suck... I just looked at Mazda Mexico and they get the crummy North America version of the Mazda 6 too, so I suppose we won't get the "rest of the world" version.

For a sec, I thought Mazda was exiting the US market. Kinda excited actually, if more Japanese made Mazdas come over.

Me too... and sadly enough I was supportive of that idea.

the title of the article was a bit misleading.

but the decision makes sense. mazda really needs to regroup and think about their future product strategy.

Not really a huge deal, the only cars Mazda built in the US were the Mazda6 and the Tribute which production was stopped for a refresh. Hopefully they don't get even more screwed because the 6 is def behind in the midsize market and now its going to be built in Mexico i just hope it doesn't fall even further behing. They should just bring over the European 6, its much nicer.
