Who Bites The Dust Next? GM Plans Leaves Room For Only Two Global Brands

Who Bites The Dust Next? GM Plans Leaves Room For Only Two Global Brands

General Motors Co. is rethinking its brand strategy — aiming for just two global brands — and intends to spend billions of dollars over the next five years on advanced propulsion systems.

The extended-range electric Chevrolet Volt, said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson, "is a novelty (today), but it won't be in five years. It's going to be an old, old technology and old news."

Next year, Akerson said, GM will unveil a bifuel engine for commercial trucks that will run on compressed natural gas or gasoline.

"In the next 10 years," he said, "this company has to break the code on advanced propulsion and that's going to be a multifaceted solution."

Hybrid cars are old news today already.

Obviously the 2 global brands will be Chevy and Buick. Buick is selling like hotcakes in China.

cannot see them drop the Cadillac brand. GMC got to go (i just don't know why they kept GMC brand, it has like 3 trunk/SUV under its name, and all of them are re-branded copy of some GM vehicle)

time for GMC to bite the dust.

GMC is going to release the GRANITE concept from a couple years ago under GMC to try and give the brand something unique and to draw attention. I do wish they kept Pontiac instead of GMC though.

GM isn't going to drop anymore brands. Rather, it will focus on making 2 brands available in every market around the world. GMC will be only sold in the US. Buick may only be sold in China. Opel will only be sold in European markets --- essentially being operated & treated like Holden --- helping to influence future designs & technology, but not offered specifically in any other market.

At this point, Chevrolet & Cadillac seem to be the likeliest to be the 2 global brands, but you never know, Buick my be the global luxury brand that best represents GM on the grandest level.

It would hurt GM's bottom line if it did shut yet another brand. Had GM allowed it's brands to really compete and use more of their own brand character...but on today's level of contemporary designs, only 1 or 2 sluggish brands would have been cut instead of four. (See VW's subsidiaries)

When they speak of global brands, why do they only show the US gm logos?
What about Holden, Vauxhall, Opel, etc.?
I can see having (2) exportable brands in the US, and brand Buick solely for the Chinese market. Leave everything else the same.

Chevrolet and Buick will stay.
Chevrolet is already a global brand and Buick is almost a global brand. Buick is on sale in USA, Canada, China and other asian countries.

On the other hand Cadillac was a big, no huge disappointment in Europe and if GM keeps Cadillac they must forget about second global brand.
