SPIED: Is Toyota's BABY Prius Aiming To Be Sporty AND Economical?

SPIED: Is Toyota's BABY Prius Aiming To Be Sporty AND Economical?
If spy photographers are a credible source, then you better believe your bottom dollar. That's because spies have told publications that the baby Prius, seen in our cover shot, was seen testing with the Honda CR-Z and Mazda2.

A pretty weird combination to say the least, but it makes a lot of sense for two reasons:

1) Toyota is likely looking to build an aggressively priced hybrid

2) Toyota could be benchmarking the new Prius C's performance against the CR-Z

What say you, Spies? Could it be?

Size matters when it comes to the Prius. We've already driven the larger Prius + this week, you can read that review here, and now our team of spies has caught the compact new Prius C out testing for the first time.

Previewed by the Prius C concept from the Detroit show in January this year, the newcomer will be the smallest and most efficient member of the family when it goes on sale in 2012 - it should also be the most affordable...

But the CRZ is NOT sporty, so that's a pretty sad bar to meet. Pundits have consistently put down the CRZ for its clear LACK of sportiness, despite Honda's best intentions.

In my opinion, the CRZ is a great "sporty looking" car. Now it's driving performance, not so much.

BUT.....

Honda has listen and is bringing a real sporty CRZ at the end of the year with a turbocharged engine. So Toyota will probably do the same.

They'll offer a dull city car, and then bring in the hot hybrid later on.

Yes, definitely looking forward to the turbo version of the CRZ - something that should have been in the original release.

Toyota doesn't make sporty cars. The CT hybrid was supposed to be the fun Lexus hybrid don't forget. It is is a dog and incredibly slow.
