Are Americans Simply Too Fat To Drive Small Cars?
Karen Steelman, a stay-at-home mom from Athens, Ga., has tried to like small cars. She read plenty of reviews, kicked their tires, and has even taken a few test drives.
But none of them make her feel safe. And none of them make her feel comfortable.
Steelman has a body mass index of about 37 – seven points above the obesity mark. She's among a growing number of Americans who feel they are too big to comfortably drive a small car.

Maybe someone in a hundred years will find a way to power vehicles with live human fat and then driving might be used to lose weight => imagine lypo-suction on the move with the fat recirculated to run a little engine when the sun goes in behind the clouds, and the solar batteries dip in power. Big people could be encouraged to eat more and they'd be favorites to drive or bring along on longer trips.

Great title. The real factor here is fuel prices. There is a big difference between the US and European markets, hence their bigger reliance on smaller fuel efficient cars.

"When the world decends into famine it's the Americans that will likely survive unscathed."
If the world "decends" into famine I doubt that any country would be unscathed, but you're probably right about the US surviving. Both due to military power and the fact that the US produces more food than it consumes. Food (mostly grain) is actually one of the largest exports of the US.
Back to topic: Height has more of an impact on the size of car you drive than weight. If you're much more than 6 feet tall then most smaller cars are just uncomfortable.

This article is garbage. Most Americans that are MORBIDLY obese (as is the man in the photo) dont even drive no matter how big the car is. That one lady in the article is just one person. Ive seen PLENTY of over weight Americans driving cars that look like they needed to grease the door jams to get into. The reason Americans dont take well to small cars is because they like everything big. Food, homes, entertainment, etc. Anything and EVERYTHING Americans like big. PERIOD. I dont have the answer to why but I know obesity isnt the reason.

I've never been more cramped then when I rode in the back seat of a Land Rover. A Honda Fit has a lot more room.
I realize a nuance like that may be missed by someone who lets their body go to hell and a society that is no longer allowed to point and laugh at them.

Americans are physically bigger so should we stuff them in smaller cars. The average American is way bigger than people from many countries so they need bigger cars, beds, homes etc.

people need not try to be the engineers figuring out if a small car is safe, that's why we have Govt. Agencies to do the testing for us, my MINI Cooper S for example get 5 star crash test ratings, what more do you need? Oh yea, and if you are obese the MINI is def not for you, sorry but it's just reality
