GM CEO wants you to pay higher taxes in order to help the industry
General Motors CEO Dan Akerson supports a plan to raise federal gasoline tax by up to $1 a gallon to encourage people to buy fuel-efficient cars. In an interview with The Detroit News, Akerson said that raising federal fuel taxes will benefit the environment more than forcing carmakers to meet more stringent fuel economy standards.

Good idea, but wrong timing. Maybe once the US gets back on its feet a higher gas tax can be implemented. Also, the US and European markets are totally different.....my guess most will hold onto their larger cars longer after they are paid for verses buying a new, more efficient vehicle.

When you get a chance, please let Mr. Akerson know that I will not buy another GM car until the UAW is no longer affiliated with his company.

His support of the plan to raise the federal gasoline tax makes me wonder when he last had his head examined.

sorry it will never happen and your single car purchase will not effect GM one bit.

This is kind of putting the cart before the horse, isn't it?

Sure, lets go ahead and raise gas prices to near record highs BEFORE the industry wide increased MPG standards are implemented. That way, we can effectively "drive" many Americans out of the work force because they cannot afford an additional 12-25 dollars per tank of gas.

Not everyone can afford to purchase a new vehicle, and this measure would cause problems to many below the median annual income level. Furthermore, the CEO wants people "to buy Cruizes, not Suburbans". Sure hope your family has less than 2 children. And you have no need for 4WD/AWD.

So i guess the REST OF THE WORLD only have families with 2 children or less ?

There are 3 seat belts in the rear of most vehicles produced and we get along just fine without Surbhurbans, Escalades, Excursions, Denalis, Expeditions H3s................

BTW

4wd & AWD are available in everything from A3 Quattros to Touaregs, we don't need 6.75L V8s to move a family of 5.

That is so true. I can't wait for Sarah Palin to take over. She really nailed that explanation about Paul Revere? Didn’t she?

Its a good idea but GM needs to get their act together with their cars before they do anything else. All of the vehicles that we purchased from them within 2 years have had a major expensive problem with them. GM worry about improving your quality before improving your fuel economy.

Is he willing to pay higher taxes? Oh... he's wealthy... I forgot. Sorry. Only the middle class and the poor should be subjected to tax increases. Got to love those Republicans. What's funny is that not a single person here even mentioned that. Lemmings. LOL!!!

Is this guy trying to kill GM? The Cruze got the worst fuel mileage in a recent MT small car comparison test.

This guy is a CEO, I bet he drives a big car,$$ that is easy for him to afford, for the average person $1. a gallon is a lot, so he wants to over tax the rest of the poor people, America is already completely broke! With another tax it may start an overthrow of the government, If it is implemented there may be a facebook page to overthrow the corrupt extremely rich and the gov. , they did it in Egypt and Libya. I say make the cars more economical! Look how far that they have come already. This guy just wants to sit on his rich ass and not have to do any work.

If he put his own hand in his own pocket to pay for the gas he uses instead of being driven in a chauffered Cadillac with all gas and costs
covered on his expense account he might have a different view of the world....typical CEO who is totally out of touch with his customers and company. He should call GM's Customer Service and complain that posted miles per gallon on windshield at time of purchase is way overstated versus real life experience. He would be surprised what answer he gets from his own people. Then again he doesn't really care does he.

Right on ! Guys like this and their board can't see beyond their next paycheck. I use to present infront of the board of a company doing
$20 billion a year in sales with board members from the top Fortune 50
companies each making millions a year. Before each meeting the first thing they looked for in front of them was their monthly check for attending....not the agenda, not the summarry of each proposal coming to theitr attention for a vote, not the company's monthly financial results... but their check ! Then when the meeting started they would check their Rolex watches every ten minutes in a hurray to get on with what was next on their agenda. The CEO of that company was fired within three years and two of his top executives indicted. No more bailouts for GM...the greatest incentive for success is the fear of failure. This guy needs a little fear to get his act together. I'll get off my soap box now...have a good day.

Instead of asking for a handout, a form of socialism, why does not GM produce a range of vehicles that exceeds the levels of performance, design, quality and economy of the the imports while still remaining competitive on price.

In other words, stop asking for more of my money and actually build a car I would want to buy!

It's funny how certain people loudly ring the bell of Capitalism & the "Free" market are usually the first ones asking for handouts and Federal money! I'm looking at you Republicans, Oil, insurance and health care providers.
