It's Coming With MORE Power! Are YOU Excited For The 2012 Buick Regal GS?
The 2011 Buick Regal has been something else, really. It's been a tremendously impressive car all around.

I never thought I'd live to say it: I dig a Buick. Here's the scarier bit, I like the non-sport versions! And when I saw the GS making its way to production, it really caught my eye. That's because I envisioned my own Regal GS with a few simple mods and it would be awesome; however, there were some caveats:

1) Would Buick bring it over to the States with power like the Opel OPC? No.

2) Would it feature all-wheel drive? No.

3) Would it feature those badass Recaro seats? Still not confirmed one way or the other.

To say I was disappointed was an understatement. At least Buick has made it up somewhat by slotting in MORE power under the hood.

Now, Regal GS' will come with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is the same amount of torque as a BMW M3. I am a little concerned how that will sort itself out since it's all going to the front wheels though.

Even though, in the bottom of my heart, I feel this is a compromised car I still have to give props to Buick for taking a walk on the wild side.

More importantly, what say you, Spies?

Buick's press release follows:

The 2012 Buick Regal GS, which arrives at dealerships this fall, has been SAE-certified to deliver 270 horsepower (201kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400Nm) for an estimated 0-60 mph performance of 6.7 seconds.

Regal GS's exclusive Ecotec 2.0L direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers more torque than Acura TSX V-6, Audi A4 Sport, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo S60 T5. Torque is the twisting force that gets a vehicle moving and what the driver feels when accelerating.

"The Regal GS 2.0L turbo delivers the highest specific output of any production engine GM has ever offered, and at 135 hp per liter is the most power dense engine ever certified by SAE," said Mike Anderson, Ecotec global chief engineer and program manager. "We've been combining direct injection and variable valve timing with boosted engines since 2006, and there's no question the Regal GS turbo has the responsiveness and acceleration of some V-6s, while delivering the fuel economy you'd expect of a four-cylinder."

Ecotec 2.0L turbo highlights include direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, forged steel crankshaft, twin scroll design turbocharger and an efficient intercooler system. The peak torque of 295 lb-ft is achieved at a relatively low 2400 rpm. There is 95 percent of peak torque available between 2300 and 4900 rpm.

The GS's engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission, and gets an estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg on the highway. A six-speed automatic transmission will be available later. The entire GS powertrain is covered by a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

Further reinforcing Regal GS's performance appeal is its Interactive Drive Control System chassis technology, which delivers enhanced vehicle stability. The driver selects among three operating modes that change the suspension settings, and steering sensitivity through the variable-effort steering system. "GS" mode optimizes the car for dynamic driving, tightening the suspension and steering response. "Standard," or the default mode, is the setting for all-around use. "Sport" mode provides a level of performance between standard and GS modes.

Regal GS also features a four-wheel-independent suspension, with a unique High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut) front suspension design. The HiPerStrut system helps reduce torque steer and maintain negative camber during cornering to keep the all-important tire contact patch on the pavement. The driver experiences improved grip and increased cornering power, along with crisper handling, steering precision and feedback.

The four-link independent rear suspension is designed to minimize unwanted toe and camber effects during spirited driving maneuvers, enhancing vehicle stability and tire grip. Both front and rear dampers incorporate active Computer Damping Control, continuously changing damper characteristics in real time to maintain optimal vehicle ride comfort over varying road surfaces and profiles. More aggressive, performance-oriented damping characteristics can also be selected by the driver when choosing "Sport" or "GS" mode.

Braking power comes from a large diameter four-wheel disc brake system featuring big, four-piston Brembo front calipers for optimal feel and modulation. A standard, four-channel anti-lock brake system is tuned to reduce stopping distances over varied road surfaces and conditions. The Regal GS also features standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control with integrated, full-speed traction control.

The GS cuts a sportier stance, too, with a lower ride height than other Regal models and aggressive 19-inch, 5-Twin Spoke alloy wheels and all-season tires (20-inch, 5-Twin Spoke polished alloy wheels with performance tires are optional).

"The 2012 Regal GS is well balanced with dynamic ride and handling, powerful brakes, great acceleration and excellent fuel economy," said Robert Casparian, Regal product marketing manager. "And the fact that one can get such great performance in a gorgeous sport sedan makes it even more attractive."

Ever drive a 1972 Buick Riviera? I beat a number of Camaros and Firebirds with that car, and kept pace with several Vettes. Many with a shocked look on their face.

I see that someone has never heard of the Buick GSX. Buick can make really exciting performance cars when it wants to and is given the opportunity. Is the Regal GS the car? Not quite, but is certainly a vehicle thats heading in the right direction.

270hp and 295lb/ft torque and still can only manage a 6.7 second 0-60 time. a BMW 328i with much less power is almost a second faster. So you can basically still get smoked by a Hyundai sonata turbo. Those numbers have to be exaggerated. it should be much faster. the old BMW M3 with 240hp and far less torque was much faster. Looks good though, but I expect more with that much power.

As a matter of fact, my brother in laws 08 VW passat 2.0t with just 200hp and 207 lb/ft torque does 0-60 in 6.6. I'd like to know where that extra 70hp and 87lb/ft of torque has gone, because the VW passat is larger than this and has less power. Just like the CTS with the 3.6 with over 300hp takes 7 seconds to get to 60 while a 528 with a smaller less powerful inline 6 is faster despite the 5 being larger. Either GM is inflating their power numbers, their drive trains are very inefficient, or everyone else is underrating their engines big time.

Most like other GM vehicles its probably a bit overweight.

You guys are taking the HP numbers and using that as if they're aren't any other variables. They're other things that can effect acceleration other than HP. Agree? What about Gearing, and Weight?

Lex you are right, however with those hp and torque numbers, it should be faster, I don't care how you gear it. Toyota Camry V6 has less hp and torque, it is heavier and is still faster than this.

I agree 100% with LexSucks and here is why... My 2005 Forester XT is a perfect example. Stock it has 210 horse 230 lb/ft torque 2.5L w/AWD. Does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.8 based on magazine stats. Top speed is ~142mph at redline in 5th gear (Cobb tuned out electronic speed limiter). Secret is the 4:44 axle ratio and light weight wheels/tires (16lbs per wheel; 21 lbs per tire) from the factory.

I agree blazinboy. All the Opel is is a Regal or Volvoo S60. But since it's not Korean, haters are going to act like all three sedans don't share the same greenhouse. Now hurry up and give me my negative votes like blazinboy. Oh yeah the Regal's truck line copied the Acura TL's its just smaller but the lines are there.

Hey nonofybus lets not go to LOgos. You know why because Subaru, Landrover and Ford have oval logos too. So what's your reason for the other non-Korean oval shaped badges?
I don't see any Acura and non of the Kia's current line up. But I do see the Acura ZDX side ripping off the Mazda 6's.

Oh yeah I don't really care about what the Volvo S60 is engineered under it's just a Buick Regal's greenhouse.

You better stay off logos because that was corny. Subaru, Land Rover and Ford have oval badges but only you say Kia is the copy because it's Korean........... at least it ain't blue like Subaru's and Ford's.

Toyota Venza and 2008 Ford Edge hint face. Saturn L300 and 2009 Toyota Highlander hint headlights. 2007 toyota Camry and 2008 Acura TL hint headlights. 2010 Mazda 6 2005 Lexes ES hint tailights. I can go on forever.

Hmmm, Hyundai copied Honda's logo? Acutally Hyundai's logo is Oval like Ford, Subaru, Kia and Land Rover not Square like Honda's. You do know your shapes right?

"How long before Hyundai or KIA totally rip off this design like they do with all their vehicles."

Like how the 2012 Euro Yaris hatch ripped off the 2009 Nissan Versa's or how the 2005 HONDA CR-V's face is found on the 2005 Lexus GX's?

You know nonofyobus now that you bring up logos copying. I guess Zelda from Nintendo copied Mitsubishi's logo. After all, the Triforce's looks a LOT LIKE Mitsubishi's logo. Now that's copying!!!

"Speaking of Acura, KIA sure is bold in their blatant rip off copying of the Acura front styling."

What specific Kia is copying Acura? Come bring it up. Headlights? tailights, side profiles? Come on you want to challenge me bring it on I love a good challenge. I need a good challenge. NOt too many people have my gift of sight. I'm the eye of the beholder, The sight of it all. I have eyes that will never forget a design or image. From the 1980s and 1990s. Take the Chevy Caprice and 1997 Camry hint tailights.
