Camaro outruns Mustang as lost sales put factory in doubt
It appears that Chevrolet Camaro is becoming the top-selling sports car in the United States and that the Ford Mustang is falling farther behind. Although Ford had different plans and wanted to see the Mustang crushing the Camaro, the American manufacturer lost the crown

The current mustang generation is already 6 years old. It's not surprising that the Camaro is outselling it. If Ford releases their new Mustang sooner, they may be able to take back the crown, however if they wait a few years for the Camaro design to age, they will gain a much larger share of the market, until of course, the next generation of Camaro comes out.

this is nothing new. If the best car in the class was always the best selling car in the class, the Camry wouldn't be #1 every year.

Wow! I remember when it used to be the other way around.

The short supply of the V6 engine exists because Ford is directing that into the F150 pickup. Buts thats only part of the problem. Mustang styling is now 7 years old if you count the 2005 model yr. Up until 2010
Mustang had a pretty free ride. But even with that they were not producing the plants 240,000 vehicle capacity. If they are to keep Flatrock open they have to get another model in there either from Ford or someone else. It's really as simple as that. The restyle for the Mustang is not coming until 2014. Ford has to be careful as to not let too much Ford Mustang loyalty go to Camaro. The V6 is a vital engine for the Mustang as it is for the Camaro. If Ford could accelerate the development of the 2.5 ecotec 4 cylinder to put out 300 HP with a decent intake and exaust sound it might be able to breath a little life into the aging pony car until the replacement hits. Ford has also resisted doing a 4dr sedan on the pony chassis as they cite fuel economy issues. But to me that does not fly as the V6 Mustang gets 31 mpg on the highway in an automatic and 29 with the 6 speed.Certainly an ecotec 4 would bring higher mpg and could bring in more customers.Dodge and Chrysler make a 4dr work just fine so thats a lot of BS.The problem is simply what to do now or with in the next few months when Mazda pulls out.Just imaging bringing back the Ford Galaxie 500 for example in a 4dr or larger coupe. That would be a creative way to keep this factory up an running. Further I would guess they could easily afford to extend the wheelbase of the current pony car chassis.Ahhh to dream..................

Don't forget the Camaro was out of production from 2002 to 2009. GM is getting make-up sales from consumers that had to do without their car for seven years!

The Camaro looks great and has a styling that most prefer to the Mustang.

Yes it's all about style and looks. Not so much about driving ability and satisfaction. The Ford is simply a bit outdated now.It did well because it was the only pony car offering from 2002-2010. I also think the 2005 redesign by making the car sit 2 1/2 inches higher took away some of the mystique about owning a pony car. All previous models sat much lower. 55 1/2 inches is the height of an econo hatchback(eg-Mini Cooper).I think the previous generation was 53 inches high and previous versions were lower still.Mustang is not the worst offender. That goes to the Dodge Challenger at over 57 inches high. If you put the new one next to the original you'd think you were in an SUV. Totally ridiculous. The Camaro is partially guilty too but a a bit over 54 inches it's still almost an inch an 1/2 lower then a Mustang. So hopefully when Ford restyles the pony car for 2014 it's going to sit lower. A sports car should always sit significantly lower to the ground then a sedan. Thats one reason it's styling is immediately more special.
Saying all this I would still take the current Mustang over the Camaro simply because it's easier to see out of and it's simply a better drive.

Overall performance-wise, I'd take a Mustang. Design-wise, I'd take the Camaro. Either way, if I had to spend $$$ out of my own pocket, I'd take the Challenger. (although no one asked me)

OAN: Why am I the only one who thinks that the 2009 vs. 2010 Mustang look NOTHING alike??? To me the 2005-2009 model is hideous. The updated, more refined, 2010 model is what it should have looked like in the first place.

LACMAN - I agree, the 2005-2009 is ugly. The latest model has a much cleaner look but honestly the platform is outdated. Nothing against the Mustang my family owns a few of them, just could use some work.

Why doesn't Ford build a rear drive Lincoln with IRS, from an updated Mustang platform, to go against the Infiniti G37, BMW 3 Series, and Lexus IS? If they did that and made it look good for 40k I am sure it would sell. Just a thought....
