2011 BMW 1M Hits The 'Ring, Is It Fast Enough For YOU?

The 2011 BMW 1M is what we've finally been waiting for from the Bavarians. It's a simple car that brings back a hint of the E30 M3, one of the hallowed M GmbH products.

But everyone wants to know two things:

1) Is it that good?

2) Is it faster than the M3?

I can answer one thing -- yes, it is that good.

SportAuto can answer the second question, albeit, it is a bit of a loaded question.

With that said, onto the results! Are you impressed?


An earlier Sportauto review already mentioned the 1M's amazing performance at Hockenheim of 1:14.1, which is not only some tenths of a second faster than the Audi TT-RS and 1.3 seconds faster than the RS 3 but also faster than any E9x M3 ever tested by Sportauto.

At the Nürburgring things were a bit different though. The 1M did pretty well and had the lap done in 8 minutes 15 seconds, thus beating the 987.5 Porsche Cayman S by 2 seconds and the Audi RS 3 by no less than 5 seconds. However, Sportauto felt like the 1M could have been even faster if it wasn't for the stiff suspension that didn't seem to work perfectly on certain bumpy sections of the Nurburgring...

I was thinking about getting one, but if it can only do 8:15 at the Ring, then I think I'll pass. ;)

Who are they kidding? 8 minutes 15 seconds is by no means "pretty well".

And a 'M' badge RWD lost to a FWD Renault Megane for full 7 seconds is "disgraceful". if not "shameless".

The cayman s is 7 second slower than the Renault, and the Audi RS3 is 12 seconds slower!!

Ya they suck.

And AUDI should maybe consider changing RS3 back to FWD, which will save several hundred pounds.
