Money Magazine Claims VW's Passat TDI Might Be The Car To Take Down The Camry
Volkswagens  new Passat midsize family sedan this fall will tussle for buyers with formidable competitors like Toyotas Camry, Hondas Accord, Fords Fusion and Chevrolets Malibu.

Midsize sedans play in the the fattest, most important slice of the U.S. automotive market, one where companies fight the hardest to gain share. Thorough May, midsize cars comprised more than a half of all cars sold in the U.S. and more than a quarter of all vehicles sold, including minivans and sport utilities.

and with even more years of Toyota lying to their customers and hiding warranty problems from the public, I would have to say that their so-called "excellent" reliability is anything but. Prior to the quake Toyotas were already headed downhill while VW has been notably improving in every aspect. I'll take the Passat TDI anyday over any Toyota. As a previous VW owner I never had any trouble with my VW and would buy another anyday. As an engineer I know how bogus the reliability methods are that estimate a reliability metric used to compare cars. The widshield wiper is not smooth enough across the windshield = 1 quality issue; "too much" brake dust on my wheels = 1 quality issue. There is no one objective measure to compare reliability unless a standard is set as to what consitutes a quality issue. I also owned an Acura with so called excellent reliability but the thing lost considerable power with age despite good maintenance, and most noteworthy, it rusted within 5 years!!!

"Even with diesel fuel's slight cost premium over regular unleaded"
that slight amount is now averaging 30 cents per gallon. Add a $6000 premium to tghe base price too btw.

It has the unnecessary costs and complications of a turbodiesel instead.
Better built i'm sure most would disagree with.
Better looking i agree; that has always been a VW/Audi strong suit. (Even if it does look like a 6 year old Kia Optima.) However, the new Camry is just a few months away.

But where will your beloved Hyundai stand 009? Today is VW and tomorrow it will be Hyundai again.

Strange the passat tdi is larger yet gets better fuel economy than the jetta tdi (30 city, 42 hwy for the jetta vs 31 city, 43 hwy for the passat)

Until they can improve their poor quality and reliability VWs are not worth looking at

Help me out here. What class is the VW CC in? I thought that was the Camry rival. I thought the Passat was the Avalon rival. Is it the other way around? Or are they both D segment cars?

The passat and CC are the same car. VW doesnt have an avalon competitor, the CC is a cls esque version of the previous generation passat both being more expensive and more upscale than the current version we have here in the states.

Look the VW's made in Puebla Mexico have had some quality and reliability problems. I have a feeling the stuff out of Chatanooga will be better made. Maybe I'm an optimist but I think VAG is very aware of the situation and has built a state of the art factory from the ground up.I think the US Passat is going to kick ass in sales. Whether it takes down Camry remains to be seen. Any car that gets 800 miles to a tank and has half decent performance, ride, and handling out to be worth taking a look at.

Ok. So since the Passant and CC are in the same class, won't one cancel out the other (why buy the Passat when you can get the better looking CC?)?
