Six Passenger Sedans On The Road To Extinction

Two types of cars that once dominated American roads are on the verge of extinction. The six-passenger sedan may soon vanish entirely. Coupes, which once accounted for about half of car sales, have become a minor player, relegated to sporty and luxury models.

Both have been replaced by vehicles that serve the same purpose better and more efficiently. Some buyers still miss the old formula, though.

We had been arguing about the pros/cons of a front bench seat for the past couple of weeks.

Some people like the extra space, ability to "cuddle" with your front passenger while driving, and the option of just having an additional "seat" just-in-case you need it. While others appreciated the flow of the center instrument panel into a center panel that would offer additional storage cubbies, cup holders, and places to plug-in media connections --- not to mention a right-side armrest for a balanced driving experience.

There are some cars that a front row bench seat just wouldn't look good in, but there are other cars that a bench is a much appreciated feature. In the end, I think aesthetics will be the ultimate determining factor and whether a good portion of the intended consumer will even want it.

A pickup truck needs the bench option - it's a work vehicle and needs the flexibility.

While it is not an enthusiast car, The Impala with the split bench is executed quite well. Had one as a loaner and enjoyed the extra space. Buddy and I would go out cruising around the country in it due to its character. It was surprisingly relaxing to drive this car. +1 to dumpsty, IMO this car is an example of where the bench is appreciated.

People were also skinnier back then as well.

I used to like sitting in the middle seat in my Dad's Impala. Got to play with the AM radio and sometimes got to drive. Miss those simple days, but we went through the bench vs. bucket seat debate back in 1989.
Dad still likes the bench...
