56 MPG Standard Planned for 2025

56 MPG Standard Planned for 2025
The Diesel Driver is reporting that government officials are floating a 56.2 mpg average fuel economy standard for cars and trucks as of 2025.

"The U.S. government could require automakers to have a fleet-wide average of 56.2 mpg (4.18 l/100 km) for its cars and trucks by the year 2025 when new standards for fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions cars and trucks are announced in September for the period from 2017 to 2025.

"Current standards for passenger vehicles are 30.2 mpg while light trucks must average 24.1 mpg. The figure for passenger cars is set to rise to 35.5 mpg in 2016."

56 mpg and higher fuel economy standards are already available in many cars sold outside of the US.

The problem is that the average brainwashed American thinks they need a big car and they also think that a bigger and more powerful engine means safer overtaking. While the latter part may have some truth to it, INTELLIGENT DRIVING also plays a part in safe overtaking. Having been to Europe quite often and having rented the weaker cars there, I can attest to the fact that overtaking on the highways with a diesel Polo, C5 or Punto isn't a problem at all. These little cars are quite agile but we'll never get to experience this in the US.

What really annoys me are our car magazines. It's pathetic how they expect a Fiat 500 or a Toyota Corolla to drive and handle like a BMW 3 series.

Gas price in 2025 will be out of this world, you will want efficient vehicles, the cars don't have to be smaller either, just built lighter and more efficient engines, also the gov. will be adding more gas tax so they still make a lot of money still. They will also give us a reason why gas has to be priced very high, eg. flood,war....

Well it looks like the US auto manufactures will have to make a motorcycle division to meet the standard. Its possible for them to make the car. Problem is that it will be very slow and very expensive.

Never happen. They're too many rich people out there that will never drive a slow econobox car. And we all know who really runs the U.S.A.

Rush Limbaugh runs the U.S.A. No he doesn't, he just runs the GOP.

He’s more than just a loud mouth? When the head of the GOP (Michael Steel) said that he was just a radio personality, he had top had to apologize to Limbaugh. GOP politicians apologize to Limbaugh if he finds out that they disagreed with him. Name any other radio loud mouth that has politicians apologizing to them?

You’re a fool if you think that he doesn’t have big influence over the GOP. That’s why the GOP is so messed up; they have no leadership, just a bunch of buffoons belting out the sound bite of the day. Good luck.

Not only does Limbaugh have the GOP Politicians apologizing to him, he has them correctly state the statement that he thought was incorrect. In other words Limbaugh makes the GOP politicians say what he wants them to say.

Here's a clip from the FOX NEWS article:

"WASHINGTON -- Two days after calling Rush Limbaugh a mere "entertainer" with an "incendiary" talk show, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele apologized and acknowledged the radio commentator as a "national conservative leader."

- And fools like nonofyobus try to have people believe that he isn't an influential part of the GOP (The former head of the GOP even acknowledged it). Nice try. I can understand... It must be embarrassing to have a loud mouth like that be the main voice of the GOP. No use to try and distance yourselves now. LOL!!
