VIDEO: The All-New 2012 BMW M5 Laps The Green Hell, Guess Where It Slots In...
So, we've finally seen the all-new BMW M5. It looks great, sounds great -- see the video down below -- and now it even has the performance to put it in the record books. At least we think.
According to recent lap times done by a BMW driver, the new M5 hits the Nurburgring in an astounding 7:55. That slots the 2012 M5 in between cars like the Ferrari F430, Caterham R500, Porsche 996 Turbo and Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale.
There is one
slight
problem though. Although details remain sketchy I'd assume this wasn't conducted by an independent authority.
With that said, don't get too excited until Sport Auto gets its hands on one.

That's the lap time for the M5 F10 around the Nurburgring.

This is unconfirmed and unofficial. Just a few days ago that site had a Jeep SRT8 driven by Jesus as the fastest vehicle.

Positive....only Jesus could produce a sub 10sec ring time that the site had listed. I am not saying the F10 isn't capable of doing the time but if its true...produce the video or it didn't happen. I hate rumors.

FI 560 hp and "astounding" 7:55? Great, that's like NSX and STI of last decade..... BMW should have Porsche tune the suspension and Nissan provide test driver..... haha

Just kidding.... my estimate is 7:40, since the hp should really help on the straight section.

Nobody tells BMW to reuse 7 series platform right? They should've come up w/ a new, aluminum one. Unfortunately BMW is all about making money now, and it's much cheaper to enhance hp than lighten the weight.

The latest BMW M engines have been rated at whp and not at the crank. Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac all show ratings at the crank, so add 15% to this number!

I wouldn't be surprised if the official times are faster, but regardless 7:55 is pretty damn good. Didn't the Panamera Turbo do 7:56? I don't recall any magazines complaining about the performance of that sucker.

Thing is Porsche never tells you Panamera is a sports car, while BMW tries to give you an impression the M badged one is.
Guess not?

Dilin I am pretty sure Porsche claims the Panamera is a four door sports car in its commercials...Anyway I am very impressed the M5 is quicker than the Panamera considering the porsche is lower and wider. It’s also 15 seconds quicker than the E63, and RS6. Though the E63 time was with the 6.3 and not the new 5.5, but I can’t imagine in going to much quicker. And you know the new RS6 will not be faster than the fastest Porsche sedan....oh the negatives of VW having so many overlapping brands. Looks like this battle is between BMW and Porsche.

Not sure why people are comparing the M5 against the Panamera since the the M5 is a Mid-Size Sedan, the Panamera is considered a Full-Size Sedan.
Lets see what the Alpina B7 Series does at the track. That would be a fair comparison, IMHO.

The 7 series is 205 inches long. The panamera is 195 inches, and the 5 series is 193 inches. I think the panamera just competes with full size sedans on price, size wise its a mid-size.

EPA rates both the new and old 5 series as mid-size. The 7 series and the Panamera are both rated large cars per EPA rating.
The new 5 series is 193.1" long and the 2010 M5 is 191.5" long.
The B7 (Standard wheelbase) is 199.8" long. The 205" you quoted is for the long wheelbase 7 series.
The Panamera as you stated is 195.7" long.
I stand by my initial post that the proper comparison to the Panamera is the 7 Series. I think both Porsche and the EPA would agree.

So..The panamera slots right in between the two. When you’re gunning for title fastest sedan in the world I don’t think full-size, mid-size matters much, the goal is to be the fastest. Comparisons between the two are unavoidable; they both use twin turbo V8s with similar Hp and torque figures with DCT transmissions. Plus they have similar weights and dimensions.
The GTR and 911 turbo are very differnt in size, and price but they are compared..

I do not get it, Why people does not accept the Panamera as Mid size , Just try to use the rear seats, (I am 6.3), The 7 and S are full size but Panamera is Mid size. I would like to see Panamera S against M5 with full Sport Package....that would be nice.
