VW named as Europe's least green car maker
Europe's largest car maker, Volkswagen, is accused of exaggerating its green record and resisting attempts to make popular models such as the market-leading Golf more fuel efficient.

The VW Group has made less progress on fuel efficiency than rivals such as BMW and Toyota and is actively seeking to thwart EU plans to reduce climate-change emissions by 2020.

Volkswagen, which makes Audi, Seat, Skoda and Bentley cars among others, has also lobbied against environmental legislation on vehicle fuel efficiency and lower emissions, Greenpeace claims. And it opposes the efforts for tougher EU emissions cuts of 30% by 2020, despite support by many other major companies for the move.

The report also said that the car giant had failed to cut petrol consumption in its cars as quickly as other manufacturers, and has failed to make technology it has developed for highly fuel-efficient vehicles standard across the fleet. Just 6% of the Volkswagen Group's global sales in 2010 were of its most efficient models, the report claims.

Greenpeace's Emma Gibson, speaking at the launch of the campaign, said: "Volkswagen has spent millions on its new advert, using children and Star Wars iconography to persuade the public that it's a responsible company.

"It was a stunningly successful advert, so VW can hardly complain if we now turn its own tactics back on the company to shine a light on its poor environmental record.

I thought this might have been significant, but then I saw it was Greenpeace making the claims.

Nevermind...

Lol, I love how people try to pass it off as non credible. Whether you like Greenpeace or not, the statements below are not made up.

-it opposes the efforts for tougher EU emissions cuts of 30% by 2020, despite support by many other major companies for the move.

-Just 6% of the Volkswagen Group's global sales in 2010 were of its most efficient models

-The VW Group has made less progress on fuel efficiency than rivals such as BMW and Toyota and is actively seeking to thwart EU plans to reduce climate-change emissions by 2020.

I've yet to see any substantial evidence that suggests that vehicle emissions are destroying the world around us. Polar ice caps are gaining in size, carbon levels around the world are hundreds of times below noticeable and we've apparently burned through half of our oil resources, if we burn through the other half there would still be nobody who could tell the difference. Other than maybe the farmers, as their crops would yield more...

Joe- So you don’t think it’s worthwhile to make cars more efficient and reduce pollution? Regardless if global warming it true or not, what’s the point in resisting the change to make them more efficient...to make more money in the short term??

@Joe_Limon. I couldn't have written what I think about all this Global Warming BS in a better way.

By resisting the change, it enables the automaker to create vehicles that are more affordable to the public, this allows a larger percentage of the public to continue being highly mobile and society as a whole more productive and the world a better place.

Yeah, in the short term.If you only think in the short term you will end up like going under. To bad the price of crude oil will always go up, and the quantities will always go down, and by not making vehicles more efficient the consumer will pay more in the long run. The longer you postpone the development of other forms of transportation the higher the development cost will be in the future.

Yes/no you argument assumes gas prices will always climb higher and higher.

Once 3rd gen biofuels start getting sorted out there will be a price stabilization. Without accounting for renewable oil reserves your argument makes sense... kind of.

Ha again short term, with globalization economies are growing at record rates plus the demand for oil is higher than it has ever been, and will continue to grow with globalization, and we are supposed to supplement it with bio fuel? For how long? Especially considering there are around a billion people without enough food in the world. How are the worlds stressed agricultural zones suddenly going to quadruple in capacity to fuel hunger and our cars/industry?

Anyway kind of getting off topic.

VW still pollutes the most and is not proactive enough...

Yes, Bio fuels have tremendous potential for meeting our current and future demands. To supply the entire USA with it's oil needs it would take about 15,000 square miles of barren waste land, or about 0.42% of the USA's total surface area.

By comparison, farm land currently takes up 1,490,625 square miles of productive usable land.

VW being the least green car maker is a fact. Greenpeace is just making it known...

WOW !!

When did Autospies get overrun by Ecoloons ?

Greenpeace is the same stupid movement that swallowed the whole "Manmade Global Cooling/Warming/Change" Agenda Hook, Line and Sinker.

If only they had shown a LITTLE BIT of common sense, logic or reasoning when all the Eco-Loons were predicting the end of the world by 2010. I would take tem more seriously now.

Himalayas will have completely melted by 2030
Last 10 years Hottest on record with each coming year hotter than last.
Sea Levels rising and about to drown whole islands and kill all its inhabitants
More Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Tsunamis, Terror Attacks, Famine, Rapes and Football Team Losses as a result of climate change.

We are still waiting for just 1 of these to be proved, most have been throughly debunked.

BTW:

One of the silly things Auto Manufacturers add to their vehicles to Cheat at emissions ratings is Stop-Start.

I and everyone i know switch this feature off every time we start our vehicles so it obviously does not work in the real world, but if VW add this to every vehicle suddenly EcoLoons would be happy.

Just like when Manufacturers in the USA were penalized in Safety ratings for not having a sticker on the Sun -Visor warning about Rear-Facing Child Seats in front seats.
