LaHood Expects Automakers To Agree On 56 MPG Standard
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said today he is optimistic regulators and automakers can reach agreement on new fuel efficiency standards for the 2017-2025 timeframe.

In a Detroit News interview today on the sidelines of an event on Egypt, LaHood pointed to the May 2009 ceremony in which automakers backed a big jump in corporate average fuel economy requirements, or CAFE standards, for the 2012-2016 model years.

56mpg? What is he trying to make the world a safer place by "legislating" vehicles without enough power to hurt people, or by increasing the costs of vehicles to the point that it'll be too expensive to buy a vehicle so a lot of people will turn to public transportation.

It's interesting with all of the Lahood bashing going on here. What's even more interesting is the lack of "you're killing us" banter from the auto mfrs as a response to Lahood's comment. Could it possibly be that the quiet response from the auto mfrs mean that they know this level is do-able, i.e. they got what they wanted out of the negotiation?
