LEAKED! Information On The 2012 Porsche 991 911 Slips Out
Although plenty of publications have taken Porsche to task for their plentiful special editions of the 997 generation, it sounds like it has one serious package coming in form of the all-new 991. Yeah, yeah, it'll still look like a 911 but it sounds like its going to be way different than before.

That's because it will grow in length, sit lower to the ground all while being lighter.

Even better, the interior is said to mimic the Panamera's, which is a welcome addition since the 911's interior hasn't been all that and a bag of chips -- don't even bring up the red-headed stepchild 996. This means the console will likely be button-centric and raised a la the Panamera and Cayenne. We saw this coming way long ago, so no surprises there.

Upon the vehicle's launch it is said to feature your standard Carrera and the more powerful Carrera S. Powering the 991 will be a 3.4-liter flat six good for 350 horses while the "S" gets an uprated 3.8-liter six good for 400 ponies.

When it comes to transmissions, this is where things get interesting. Remember how we mentioned the possibility of a seven-speed manual? It's coming. Of course if you don't want to row through the gate though, you can select a PDK unit.

Look for the 2012 991 to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

The wall of secrecy surrounding the brand-new 2012 Porsche 911 has cracked thanks to a forum member of Teamspeed who downloaded and shared Car & Driver’s upcoming August issue in which the magazine has an exclusive first ride of the car. C&D joined the Porsche team during the new 911’s final tests in South Africa and here’s what they found out.

The new 911 is code-named 991 and will be launched in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Compared to the 997 that it replaces, it is 2.5 inches longer and has a 4.0-inch longer wheelbase so that it can accommodate a hybrid system, presumably from the Panamera...

350 is on the low side and not much of an improvement for the base Carrera considering it's already rated at 345HP right now. The S is currently rated at 385, so it makes sense it will break the 400HP marker, but the base needs to jump to around 360 or 370 to be respectable for a 911.

Remember that the Turbo is over 500HP, so there's still a large gap between the S and Turbo. If the S can be 415 and the base 375, that would be progress. Most importantly, the M3 is rated at 414HP... the base 911 should be a little closer.

Lighter, More Fuel Efficient, Larger, More Power.

Hp numbers are just that, Numbers. Maybe you have not cottoned on to the fact that Porsche drivers fall into 2 Categories:

1- Those who buy it because it is a Porsche and as such they would not care much about Hp numbers

2- Those who truly enjoy driving and as such are more interested in the Balance and overall handling more than Hp numbers.

The 991 will be lighter than the 997...that´s the smarter way to improve overall car performance compared to just adding some extra horses!

I agree, lighter IS better than extra HP, but the reality is people do pay attention to HP, it's all part of the car market. Ferrari, Lambo, AMG, BMW, etc... name one premier sports car company that doesn't significantly increase HP with every generation? I too would rather a car lose 100 lbs. instead of receiving an extra 20HP, but the reality of the premium car market is prestige and that includes HP. It does help that the 911 Turbo puts out over 500HP, don't you think?

But the fact that it is going to about 80 LBS lighter is like giving it extra horspower. It will be interesting to see how the weight distribution has changed. What is the current 911 39/61 front to rear.By moving the rear wheels further back it may bring it 42/58. That's very close to a typical mid engined car. This new 911 should have a bit more handling balance then ever before.
