UAW Says A Dialogue Has Been Established With Executives At New VW Plant

UAW Says A Dialogue Has Been Established With Executives At New VW Plant
After decades of getting the cold shoulder from automakers in the South, the United Auto Workers union is courting the region's newcomer, Volkswagen.

UAW southern region director Gary Casteel told The Associated Press that the Wolfsburg, Germany-based automaker has traditionally had an organized work force globally and that makes executives and employees at the new Chattanooga assembly plant "more willing to talk to unions about representation."

Good luck to VW, no matter how big a company is the union will hurt it.

I will never again buy a car from a company that uses Union Labor.

Sorry to learn that VW is even talking to UAW.

I like the new Passat and that it is made in Tennessee using non-union employees. I was considering buying the car. However, until this issue is resolved I will postpone my buying decision.

What car company doesn't use union labor? There are japanese auto unions, and german auto unions...

It better to funnel tax payer money to corporations.

That's even worse than unions (having a car built in Mexcio ;-). In the USA Today, I read an article that listed where countries and auto plant ranks in terms of quality to their cars they're building. I was very surprised by the listings. Cars made in Mexico were second from the bottom in quality. The Jetta and VW Beetle are made in Mexico.

@Joe Limon: there are plenty of auto plants that do NOT utilize a union to build their cars. That information was also listed in the article. I believe unions are a dinosaur; always striking for more pay. Union workers should be grateful they have a job (to pay for their pot they're smoking at lunch). Say NO to the union!!

This is a bad idea. The UAW has been trying to get into the import manufacturers for a while with 0% success rate. There have been some interesting comments on this subject in the last 2 months on this site. If the employees are happy and don't want or need UAW representation, leave them alone and go back to Detroit. If they think they needed some help they would call the UAW.
