Toyota Prius Shines, Volkswagen Touareg Stumbles in 2011 Hybrid Scorecard
Just the Facts:

* The Toyota Prius is the top non-luxury hybrid in the 2011 Hybrid Scorecard compiled by the Union of Concerned Scientists. But the group said the Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid was the "worst offender" when it came to cutting pollution.
* The non-profit group also singled out the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid and BMW's X6 and 750i ActiveHybrids as among the worst-rated hybrids for environmental improvement.
* In the luxury market, the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and Lexus CT 200h earned high environmental improvement scores.

WASHINGTON — The Toyota Prius is the top non-luxury hybrid in the 2011 Hybrid Scorecard compiled by the Union of Concerned Scientists. But the group said the Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid was the "worst offender" when it came to cutting pollution.

The Prius was praised by the non-profit group for "delivering a more than 40 percent reduction in global warming pollution compared with its closest conventional models."

Other non-luxury hybrids that earned high marks include the Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Honda CR-Z.

The scorecard noted that "only 13 of the 34 hybrids reviewed cut more than 25 percent of the global warming pollution emitted by their conventional vehicle counterpart." The Touareg Hybrid was criticized for "emitting less than 10 percent less" than the conventional version. The USC said it was an "all-time low on the scorecard."

Correction, I think you are hilarious!...and and interesting case study to boot.

The Touareg hybrid is essentially the replacement for the 4.2 V8 as the highest performing Touareg. 0-60 in 5.9 seconds is very respectable for its class. This hybrid certainly does deliver V8 performance with better fuel economy than the base VR6.

The Touareg scored worse than similar hybrids like Porsche Cayenne Hybrid and BMW's X6 ActiveHybrid.

Which makes it hard to believe their numbers, the Cayenne Hybrid and Touareg hybrid have the same powertrain as do the base Touareg and the base Cayenne so their environmental ratings should be the same.

There must be some differences or else they would have scored the same...

Chewy, there are two components to the score: the improvement in mileage over its closest conventional model and the emissions. The conventional Cayenne model gets worst mileage than the conventional Touareg model, so the Cayenne hybrid gets credited for a greater improvement. Emissions are compared regardless of class, so big and high-powered cars will fare worse (no surprise there). Not sure what model they use to compare the Prius, but because it doesn't really have a conventional model, whatever they're comparing it to will not likely have the same aerodynamic design, low rolling-resistance tires, or CV-type transmission (none of which exactly relates to hybrid technology).
