50 MPG Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Coming in 2013
The Diesel Driver is reporting that GM may launch a diesel-powered Cruze by 2013. This could be a game-changer since the Cruze oil burner would reportedly get 50 MPG, putting it on the level of the Prius.

"Today, a new car buyer in the U.S. looking for a diesel can choose from models from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen. That could soon change if General Motors starts to offer the Chevrolet Cruze, currently the most popular new car in the U.S., with a diesel engine."

would be very easy to do because the Tahoe and suburban are based on the silverdo which has a diesel that can easily go into both.

Blame our idiotic EPA that basically demands automobiles that act as mobile air purifiers. We have the oldest and toughest air quality standards in the world, but we're always labeled as "dirty", anti-green, etc. Thus as a result of this brainwashing, the anti-science masses buy into the idea of ever-tougher standards.

Net result? Extra cost of diesel anti-pollutuion equipment passed onto consumers, making it a non-starter for any vehicle that can't recover the costs on the European market.

Part of the problem with the American market is that it has been predominantly exposed to European diesels. "Diesel" isn't the problem here, it's the "European". VW's gasoline engined cars have not been paragons of virtue much less their diesels. Yet, they sell fairly well. If the likes of Toyota or Nissan had offered their diesels in the US for as long as VW has the public opinion would be different. I guarantee it. And this hogwash about diesel fuel being more expensive is getting old. The average diesel car gets about 25-35% better fuel economy for about 20 cents extra (a BP gas station in Davie FL that I just checked out has regular gas for $3.99 and diesel for $4.19). I could get into the math of it, but there are people on Autospies who are just idiots plain and simple and I would just be wasting my time. For those who are interested in the facts, go to the following websites to view what's really going on.

The Cruze diesel in the USA is going to get 50MPG hwy? I doubt that. The VW Passat TDI is 43MPG hwy, with the EPA test cycle. Does GM have some secret diesel technology out there that VW isn't doing?
What's the point when the Cruze Eco gas car is 42MPG hwy EPA rated?
