Lincoln Says It's Going After Lexus And BMW. Before You Laugh Remember Hyundai's Rise From The Ashes
For as long as I can remember auto companies have been making bold claims.

But until Hyundai has done what has seemed like impossible it's next to impossible to recall anyone else actually ACCOMPLISHING their promises.

At least at that level.

Now Lincoln is claiming that they will build the ultimate luxury car.

One that drives as good as a BMW, with the luxury appointments of a Lexus.

Here is the exact quote from the WSJ:

"“Lincoln will give [customers] opportunities to tell a story about what is unique in their vehicle,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s head of global product development, in an interview. “You think of BMW as engaging to drive; you can think of Lexus as refined. Bring them together and it is a new experience no customer has ever had.”

On the surface it sounds like that would be at the 'Miracle on Ice' level of accomplishment.

But so did Hyundai's claims and look where they are now and HOW FAST they did it.

So what are your thoughts.

Is this POSSIBLE or are the whacked?

And if you think it is, how far away are these cars?

Discuss...

What exactly has hyundai accomplished that makes them so deserving of praise in an article about lincoln? Especially in terms of the luxury game where the maker has more Accent sales then it does Equus, Genesis Sedan, and Genesis Coupe combined. Let me remind you that the base Accent doesn't have air conditioning, power windows, or a radio. And is one of the few vehicles left that starts under $10,000.

Maybe its just me, but aren't you insulting your company by saying we wnat to build a car that drives like a BMW and as refined as a Lexus?? reading through the lines your telling your would be consumer to buy one of the other 2 brands, lol they have to be good if thats what you want to emulate. Buy the real thing....

The Lincoln guy does not know the luxury automotive market very well. You can already buy a luxury car that is engaging to drive and refined...it's call Audi.

Lincoln? Is that brand still alive? Anyone who thinks that Lincoln can compete with BMW and Lexus is an idiot.

My memory is that Hyundai never "rose from the ashes." Rather, it was slow and steady climb from the days of the forgettable Pony. We have yet to see if the Big Three can "rise from the ashes," as two of them have already gone Chapter 11 at least once. Kudos to Ford for being the lesser of Thee Evils.

I can't think of a less appealing brand than Lincoln or Mitsubishi

Since the same story is (basically) posted twice, here's my cut/pated comment:

---------------------------

It will be interesting to watch Lincoln try, but Ford has to be willing to invest the money in at least one Lincoln-specific platforms (or spread the costs by offering a large RWD Ford). Until they do this, they will be a luxury pretender.

It's a shame, because Ford had some good platforms to work with in the recent past, such as the IRS T-bird/Cougar, but insisted on saddling the Lincoln version with their stupid air-suspensions, and styling the Mark 8 like a giant Ford Probe. IMHO, the last Lincoln worth caring about was the 1992 Mark 7 LSC, which could have been even better with the 300hp DOHC offered the next year in the ugly Mark 8.

If there were any real "car people" in Ford's upper management, they could have easily modified the last Panther-platform Town Car with an IRS borrowed from a last-gen Explorer, added the 5.4 V8 and the better trans to go with it. Restyle the body to look like something very dramatic (rather than an inoffensive bar of soap) and although you still wouldn't have a "cutting edge" car, you would at least have something worth talking about, or making into a limo.

Lincoln TC is only available for fleets, then goes away later this year.
