Toyota bets on 2012 Camry to steal Hyundai's US market share
Toyota Motor Corp. is relying on Camry sales to hit its earnings target for 2011 and to regain the market share that now belongs to Hyundai Motor Co.'s Sonata sedan. The Camry has been the top-selling car in the U.S. but for the month of May, it lost to the Sonata as Hyundai increased production of this model.

I would say regain lost market share. 1 month does not accurately track a trend.

I have a Camry as my daily driver. It's a nice car and I can definitely tell the difference between the Hyundai and the Camry. The Hyundai is nice on the surface but the Camry wins on the details. I doubt the so called redesign will do anything to make a huge difference.

The Camry hasn't always been number 1, and it won't always be. In fact, when it was at its best, it trailed the Accord and the Taurus in sales. The mid-sizers class is competitive again, like it hasn't been since those days. But I don't think the Sonata will come out on top.

Toyota fan here will go out on a limb and say that the redesign will buy Camry maybe 2 years more on top, but then it's over. How about a thread on what car people think will finally dethrone it.

Upstart Sonata? Styling will fade, not enough dealers or supply.
Resurgent Accord? Honda has lost their mojo, will not return soon.
Restyled Malibu? Always destined to be an also-ran, Sorry Chevy.
Euro-styled Fusion? I'd look in the rear-view mirror Camry, this one's gaining on you.
Or are compacts going to get back on top like in the 80s? Maybe the Focus, Cruze, Civic, or since we're talking a couple years out, a restyled Corolla?
Then there's the wild card..... the 4 or 5 car line-up under one name. Prius. That's my bet in say 2014.

Wow, good research.
1991 Accord
1992-1996 Taurus
1997-2000 Camry
2001 Accord
2002-2011(presumably?) Camry

My concept of time is horrible, it's been number one for longer than I remembered. I was definitely referring to those early 90s Accord/Taurus years, just hadn't recalled how long ago that actually was! Damn, I'm old.

Thetruth, why didn't you mention Chrysler's upcoming small cars? You don't think they will be competitive? If the interiors and exteriors of the GC, Durango, 300, and Charger are any indication of things to come, you just might need to mention them! Their midsize sedans and small cars will also "allegedy" be featuring the Multi-air engines and 9-speed transmissions. Just sayin'...

Not to steal but to get back market share.

This 2012 Camry will not out sell the top selling Sonata, the Camry still looks the same, boring, I would buy the top safety pick, Sonata, and the Sonata looks better, and the Camry would cost more, so why would I buy number 3 (Camry) if I can buy no 1 for cheaper?

Attention Toyota fans, I used to own 3 toyota's, the difference between you and myself is I make assumptions/decisions based on facts, I was almost dead set on buying a Corola because it is economical...but being a good consumer I researched all of the vehicles and the Civic kept on out performing the Corola on everything, so I went with Honda, I am not saying you can't like this boring car, (my Civic is also BORING),lol I just think that other vehicles out perform it.

The 2012 Camry is just a rehash of the new Avalon. Uber snooze fest, Sonata wins.

New Camry has to be class leading in most of the departments especially interior design and quality of materials used, fuel economy and also should be more sporty this time with class leading braking and stability systems.

It's hilarious to see all of the Hyundai ass kissers in here... praising a car that they were no doubt laughing at with the rest of the sheep not more than a year ago. Just jumping on a bandwagon that you all think will make your relevant and knowledgeable. Funny everyone praises the Sonata even though to styling was ripped from the Toyota Solara, VW CC, and Mercedes E-Class Coupe. The Sonata is very nice and I sat in one before it even came out at the 2010 DC Auto Show. It would have been the top choice car for me (alongside the Camry SE). But, the car looked dated for jump simply because it looked like cars that had already been out. Fast-Forward to now, the Sonata rarely captures my eye, anymore. The new Camry will no doubt outclass the Sonata. I remember right before the current Camry was introduced, the restyled Sonata had just came out. There were commercials lambasting the 5th generation Camry and a lot of people were talking about how the Sonata blew the Camry out of the water. All of those comments and comparisons faded away into the sunset the moment the current Camry came out. Hyundai yanked those commercials faster than a bullet firing. Don't be too jealous of Toyota. Please are sleeping on Toyota and talking about how they're not this or that anymore, yet, it seems like every automaker (including your precious Hyundai) are still trying emulate/copy/catch up to Toyota. Hyundai is already talking about making a Venza-like car and supercar to combat the Lexus LFA. Let's get real and lay off the pipe, people.

lol, lets talk sheep, Toyota fans are great sheep, I don't see much difference here in the new Camry, the Sonata is just a better car according to many people, I have talked to a handful of disgruntled Camry owners for the expense of repairs, it would have turned me off too, and I hardly think that Hyundai would pull there ads for fear of looking dated in comparison to the Camry, and you think Toyota doesn't copy? Has Toyota dealt with all of the quality issues plaguing this car? The Honda Accord is just as boring but better than this car.
