Your Friend HAS To HAVE A 'GREEN' Car. What Are The Top 3 You Recommend To These Lost Souls?
You know how it is with people and cars.

When they HAVE to have something, there is NO reasoning or talking them out of it.

So your friend, neighbor, gorgeous girl you want to get with on the bar stool next to you tells you they HAVE to have a green car and they want your recommendation because you know SO much about cars, blah, blah, blah.

I think it's an easy answer but you may find the question isn't easy becuase as you know these 'buyers' don't necessarily want a GREAT car, they just are making a statement.

Even though you KNOW buying something like a $12k Hyundai Accent and using the other $20k to buy Apple stock is REALLY the right answer.

But you KNOW they don't want to hear THAT!

So in the end this is ALL about giving them what they want and making you look brilliant and compassionate to the cause, right?

So what are your top three that you recommend? The 3 you think are the BEST at what they do?

I would, of course, recommend a diesel. At the lower end of the price range there's the VW Jetta TDI or Golf TDI. If they want fun and performance, get the BMW 335d before it goes out of production!

I'd tell them that the greenest car they can buy is a old honda CRX. Prius beating fuel economy and the peace of mind knowing that you're not creating a lot more up front emissions by buying a new car.

Then I'd recommend a synergy green camaro lol

Depends on too many other factors.

In no order, and depending on factors:
1. Tesla Roadster for the rich folks, get one quick!
2. Leaf, if they have a second car.
3. Prius, if they need a vehicle that still makes the most sense with the fewest compromises.(Not too expensive, highly versatile, rock solid, exceptional FE, spacious, makes the right statement, roomy.)

I want to say there is a reason to get a Volt, I really do. But if they can plug in a car and the Leaf won't do, wait for the Plug-In Prius. It'll be worth the wait from what I read. I intend to rent one from ZipCar soon.

Depending the needs of said friend, in no particular order, here are my suggestions:
1. Honda Clarity if you are in CA, but if you aren't in CA, I'd go with a Honda CRZ for the fun factor.
2. Chevy Volt - the more I see them, the more I really like them. A little high on price, but I think it's a good car.
3. VW Jetta TDI Wagon - one of the cool wagons out there.

Well, I'll number mine by price range

1 - ~$20,000USD price range: Used or demonstrator VW Golf TDI Clean Diesel. You can never go wrong with a VW Group diesel. 30/41 mpg
2 - ~$40,000USD price range: Used or demonstrator BMW 335d. An brilliantly fun car, that keeps on performing and performing and performing. 23/36 mpg
3 - ~$80,000USD+ price range: Used or demonstrator Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid. The whole making a statement business, it's a hybrid. Otherwise I'd suggest the V8 S550 just for kicks. 19/25 mpg
(I'm going to sneak in a 4th if the person really hates the concept of 2 diesels and 1 mild-hybrid)
4 - $600/month price range: Honda FCX Clarity. Saw the Top Gear episode, looks like quite an interesting car. A good idea if my 'friend' likes leasing and really wants to make an environmentally friendly statement. 61mpg, hydrogen engine.

Mpg doesn't represent, however, the emissions the car produces, so that's why I've chosen the above as they both rate pretty well in terms of amount of CO2 emitted annually.

Chevrolet Volt, Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf.

I'm a diesel guy but I would never recommend anything that VW, BMW, or Mercedes makes to anybody ever again. The last I did that, i recommended a VW product and now I feel guilty every time one of my dearest friends complains that her car is broken. So you know that I feel guilty VERY often. Pieces of shit. When the Cruze diesel (or any other non-European diesel) hits the market I'll recommend that over the Leaf.
