1. Mercedes CLS550: Awesome (though polarizing) looks, beautiful interior, and that awesome TT V8.
2. BMW 550i: Another great engine, sleek body, and a very upscale interior.
Others in no particular order:
M3, C63, CTS-V, S4, A6 3.0, 740i, A7.

I agree with you on CLS, too.
Judging by the rest of the comments/suggestions, it looks like Lotus Evora or Porsche Cayman are the top choice.

To answer this question properly you really must look at where your priorities lie. Do you want a jack of all trades, master of none sort of mish mash vehicle that tries to be a bit of everything? Or is there specific traits that you desire more?
The best performing vehicle under that $75k price point would be the Z06 Corvette
From there, start sacrificing performance for luxury features and you'll start getting into vehicles like the M3, CTS-V, 550xi. Go far enough away from the performance end and you'll probably end up with some sort of Lexus or the Equus.

The Lexus.... Oh... I forgot, they don't have any all new 2011/2012 vehicles.
Seriously... my favorite under 75k car? Probably the BMW 550i followed by the CTS-V and then the Audi S4. The BMW 1M is also in the hunt.

I would say the CLS 550 and audi S5 but everybody has already mentioned these. The M3 has also been talked about. There just anything from japan that comes to mind in that price range. And from the US, forget about it. The E class has a strange hold on me, it seems angular and aggressive. Haven't seen enough of the new 5 series but it seems cool.

Hey, Agent001! What is YOUR hottest 2011-12 ride under $75K base price?
It is evident that we have some haters here who keep deboosting most of the decent posts, except the ones who mention American cars. Hence, there is no clear winner.
PS. Sorry guys, but there is no American car in this luxury league close to 75K that is worth spending money on.

It does say YOUR. If I could find a brand new Ferrari GTO for $74,999 it wouldn't fit MY needs, therefore, would not be on my list. ...but it would be on most people's list here, wouldn't it. I swear there are a bunch of twelve year old kids inhabiting this site.

so many good cars at that pricepoint. several options:
1. A7
2. CLS
3. 550i
4. M3
5. CTS-V
depends what you need....but i'd probably go for the A7 right now.
