New Beetle vs MINI

New Beetle vs MINI
So the Bug is biting back. Our first drive on Page 38 revealed the new Volkswagen Beetle is a big step forward. But is it good enough to dethrone the MINI?

To see if the latest VW can tempt buyers away from the BMW-built baby, we brought a 2.0-litre Sport version together with a Cooper S.

The outgoing Beetle, launched in 1998, never quite lived up to expectations. Lacklustre dynamics and limited appeal left it feeling chronically outdated when the new MINI arrived in 2001. But now, Golf MkVI underpinnings mean it can finally compete with the involving driving experience of the baby Brit.

Ultimately, the Cooper S is more agile, thanks to its shorter wheelbase, yet the VW now feels as if it is a genuine relative of the Golf GTI. Its longer wheelbase contributes to greater refinement at high speed, too.

Inside, the Beetle is a match for its rival on design and quality. Although the MINI is quirkier, with its bulbous central speedometer and array of toggle switches, the VW aims to impress with a mature, Golf-inspired dash and shiny facia. There’s more space in the back of the Beetle, which is hardly surprising given that it’s more than a metre longer. Its 310-litre luggage compartment also dwarfs the 160-litre bay under the MINI’s bootlid.

On paper, the VW is the more powerful car, developing 197bhp – as well as 280Nm of torque – from its Golf GTI-derived 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. In contrast, the MINI’s 1.6-litre turbo produces 184bhp and 177Nm of torque.

But that’s only half the story, as the Cooper S weighs 219kg less than the VW, at 1,215kg. The result? It’s slightly quicker from 0-62mph (7.0 seconds compared to 7.5 seconds for the Beetle), and its top speed is marginally higher, too, at 142mph. The Bug’s extra weight also hits fuel economy: while the MINI claims 48.7mpg returns and emits 136g/km of CO2, the VW can muster only 36.7mpg and 179g/km.

The Beetle is expected to cost around £4,000 more than the £18,015 Cooper S, but it’s bigger and better equipped. So if you want a premium car that’s small and retro-inspired, your choice just got a lot tougher.

The earlier Minis had mechanical gremlins, but the VW' have poor build quality. So neither will be trouble free. I personally would never buy a car that had a flower vase in it at one point.

The Mini has the worst torque steer imaginable - therefore, the driving dynamics are unacceptable. The runflat tires and "no spare" are also unacceptable. For me, the new VW will be the winner - hands down.

I have a Cooper S - it isn't the torque steer that bothers me, but the tendency of the car to hop sideways if you hit a bump in mid corner. Also, the ride quality of the new Beetle will almost certainly be better - the Mini can be pretty rough riding over bumpy roads. My Carrera S, even with sport suspension, has a better ride quality than my Mini. Still, to say that the Mini's driving dynamics are unacceptable is over the top. It's a fun car that steers and handles like a go-cart, but also, at times, rides like one.

Mini is the winner its 400lbs lighter, quicker, more fuel efficent, and way more fun to drive.

The beetle is way to big, why not just get a Golf.

The Mini gets 10mpg better, $4000 less, and is more gender nutral than the beetle. The beetle looks to cute to be taken seriously.

The current mini is 10 years old, the next gen cooper which is a year away will also offer diesel in the US.

The current Mini had a style change and engine change for the 2007 model year. It is therefore is 5 yrs old. I have a 2006 Coopper S that has been fairly reliable. It does have some torque steer, especially as I have some engine mods on it. I hear the 2011 model has virtually banished torque steer however due to some steering softwear that BMW developed.Saying that I don't think the restyle in 2007 was as successful as the 2002-2006 model yrs for the Mini. It does have better seats,it has a slightly better ride. However it is still a very small car. It may have more agility then the Beetle but perhaps not by much. Also the Beetle is an improvement in style and interior. The turbo engine would be the one to go for. It offers more livability for it's driving fun. From an exterior and interior style point of view the Volvo C30 is still my favorite. Unfortunately it does not drive as well as a Mini or probably a Beetle.

I can't wait for the Koreans to go retro. Sign me up for a 2017 Hyundai Pony, or a 2019 Diahatsu Charade!

This showdown should be called "The Unreliables".
