looks are subjective, but overall not the 750, a8 , xj , or ls460 beat the S class in terms of the standard of greatness. ( especially if you start getting into the AMG models of the S class )

I don't know about outclassing but in terms of speed the Audi A8 is # 1 ... that is speed of depreciation.

My lease on my current car is ending soon, so I went for test drives and even took home the Audi A8 4.2 FSI, the BMW 760Li and the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. As Audi refuse to offer anything higher-spec than the 4.2 (at least here in Australia), it was given quite a beating by the 760Li and S63. It has a bland exterior design that was fundamentally lifted from the A4, and whilst you can surely notice quite a high quality interior feel, it is let down by the exterior and when you are driving it, the feeling that you are in a big enormous car, unlike what I felt in the 7 and S. What did I order? The S63. It's my 3rd in a row, a winning formula, so why fix something that ain't broken? The ultimate luxury and sports sedan. It does not outclass the A8.

Both are the 1950's Cadillacs for the 21st Century...floating boats with no soul for the enthusiast. Don't get me wrong they are great cars to own and be seen in but not great cars to drive.

Agree, Audi is reaching here.

The superbowl Ads were great but truly the A8 is not an "S" class trouncer.

Other than the very cool interior ambient lighting etc. the A8 is too bland and clearly caters to the Asian markets in styling cues.

As usual one must wait to see what the S8 will be like to see if this design has any real moxy.

Got to laugh at the pretentiousness of Audi some times.

After driving all three back to back on a closed course, the S550, 750 and A8 all accelerate about the same....less than one car length difference to about 70mph. When it came to braking and steering however, the A8 far outperformed the other two. The A8 weighs considerable less and that's really felt in the handling and braking areas where the A8 had much quicker steering response, higher lateral G's and much shorter braking distances. Combine that with the best in class interior, and....well, you get the idea.

If I took an A8L W12 and compared it to a 750 or S550 it would blow the doors off both of them, but someone out there would cry FOUL at that now wouldn't they?

I recently drove a new A8, its nice, but I prefer the Mercedes interior hands down, it has a much more solid/quality feel. The most notable difference between the two is ride quality, the A8's ride quality is gaaaaaarbage compared to the S class.

The A8 is no comparison with the 7er and S550. When I see the beemer or Benz I can't help but look, when I see the a8 I say to myself When did they make an A4L?
