Are You Going To Let The New Federal Mileage Standards Force You Into An Econobox?

Are You Going To Let The New Federal Mileage Standards Force You Into An Econobox?
Engineers have long known that designing smaller, lighter vehicles is an ideal way to meet tighter fuel-economy standards. Less bulk, higher MPG. Problem is, American motorists have a long-standing love affair with large, powerful vehicles.

Automakers are finally breaking their dependence on heavier models and managing to create comfortable, luxurious small cars consumers actually find appealing. As new models roll out -– especially from Ford (F), General Motors and Hyundai -- the category is gaining in popularity and competitiveness. That trend is likely to continue as regulations grow tighter.

The better question is who needs truck and suv? Only fat people and businesses need them.

And what should the soccer mom with a 6 year old toddler and newborn drive? That is a lot of gear to stuff in a sedan.

How about an Accord, Camry, Sonata, Civic, Cruze etc.? If I'm not mistaken, all of these have trunks and room for two child seats.

Here's an option, how about not having so many kids?

How about trades people or active people that need a vehicle to travel off the beaten path, my life has been boring since I gave mine up, I also like sports cars, it is possible to appreciate the advantages of both extremes without being a ignorant red neck.

Of course! There is not no one car that fits all purposes. If you need a truck or large vehicle for your job, then you have to have it. What these regulations should bring is better fuel economy throughout all of the product lines of automotive manufacturers. I'm not saying that a F350 Super Duty is going to achieve 37 mpg on the highway, but by the time these rules come into play, you may be in the mid to high twenties on the hwy or maybe the twenties in the city.

More power, good point, we all need vehicles for different things, just like the soccer mom that lives where it snows a lot, if the family were to travel somewhere without a suv it would take more gas and money to buy two vehicles...so the SUV can be more efficient when you crunch them this way.

its not a question of who needs to drive an suv or a v12. the question is who WANTS TO and more importantly we should have the CHOICE IF WE WANT IT. The govt only job is to defend us against enemies. after that stay out of my business. where does it end already. they tell us what to eat, what to drink, what kind of lightbulbs i can use how to paint my house etc etc. If i want a big mac and can afford it why should i be punished by higher taxes. why should i be regulated if i want a soda especially if i go to the gym every day. bottom line stay out of my business. if i want to send my kids to school with some cookies its my damn choice. stop the nanny state and dont give me the environmental bs either.

Interesting, lets look at families that are ignorant on how to look after there kids, some people drink pop when they are thirsty and same for the kids, I could tell you horror stories of what I have seen, we should have a stupid tax, because the parents will wreck there children's lives from poor eating and lifestyle habits, places like Mcdonalds should be taxed much higher and places that have healthier menu es should be lower, yes we do need a nanny state sometimes, my cousin has poor eating habits, he works out all of the time, and now he has high cholesterol due to his poor diet, by the way he is ripped too, but a very bad diet.

This just stupid. Just because auto makers maybe, there is still plenty of time for the automakers to buy their way out of the mandate, does not mean that you have to buy one. I'm sure all of the car companies will continue to build and sell inefficient, high profit per vehicle suv's and luxury cars.
