Honda In Damage Control Mode After Consumer Reports Slams Civic
Honda executives have gone into damage-control mode over a negative review of the automaker’s newly redesigned Civic sedan that appears in the September edition of Consumer Reports.

John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda Motor Co., sent an email to dealers earlier this week noting that, “sometimes you disagree even with those for whom you have the greatest respect. And it seems as if that is what has occurred with the Consumer Reports review of the 2012 Honda Civic LX.”

My neighbor bought a Honda Civic about 3 weeks ago. What a disappointment. He even said he "the interior has that plastic feel" but he wanted it for reliability. Honda will always be reliable, but IMHO having a nice interior that doesn't look or feel cheap, is nearly as important. There are too many car companies to choose from and the competition is good enough not to have to settle for very cheap looking plastic interiors.

A few years ago I bought a Corolla and a friend bought a Civic. Same vintage, same equipment. The interior of his Civic was light-years ahead of my corolla. You could see where your money went. Switches moved with fluid precision and the gear selector snicked from detent to detent with authority. Quality was seen and felt everywhere. My landlord now has a Civic (current generation) and it has been one disaster after the other. The interior doesn't feel as nice as my friend's 2002 model and it certainly has not been as reliable. A transmission failure, several computer flashes to correct engine misbehaviour, and a recent air con failure add up to a very unsatisfactory vehicle. I've never been a Honda fan, so it's no hair off my nose either way. Automotive arrogance always precedes a fall from grace. That's what happened to Honda. They forgot themselves and felt that they were above their customers.

"Honda" and "AUTOMATIC transmission failures" essentially go hand in hand. Notice I said "automatic transmission failures", their manuals are bulletproof.

Honda puts too much emphasis on style over substance, and style is a loose term. Acura had it right at one point but then they lost their vision too. Im sure they will get it back, but they better hurry cuz Toyota and Hyundai won't hesitate to kick them down.

I have little complaints for my 2007 Civic, the negatives are the air con isn't strong enough even for Canada, I have 250,000.km with no major problems, I had a wheel bearing replaced by warranty and another recall, that has been it, I would like to see the numbers to back up CR's claim, how could the 20 year old Corola be suggested and not the Civic? Does anyone remember when they didn't suggest the Vibe and the Matrix was a top pick? CR is either stunned or biased, maybe influenced$$$ ?

I would like to see Honda distance themselves from the competition like they once did.
CR just doesn't have the same credibility as the rest of the automotive press. And the word from all the majors is the Civic is improved, but it is a mild evolution vs. revolution--so what?
I know what a Civic feels like after lots of years and miles. I doubt that Ford, Hyundai, etc. will feel as well put together at that point.
I'm stickin' with Honda.

I own a Honda and like it, and I agree with your statement that it has improved... but just don't let your self be blind and only think your vehicle is the best, let your opinion be based on facts, not opinions, and I still think Honda is one of the top, I haven't crunched any numbers lately, i know other vehicles have improved dramatically, potentially surpassed the Civic in some ways?

It's sad to see people place so much faith in Consumer Reports, especially for cars.

The cup holders in the new ______ break, the car isn't recommended.

They don't like the position of the signal stalk in the ______, car is not recommended.

Consumer Reports is a joke. I've never listened to them and I never will. I drive a 2006 Mercedes C230 V6 and I've never had any issues whatsoever with this car. Hell, my previous A4 was as reliable as a brick.

My sister had a Prius II which had several electrical defects and left her stranded twice within three months. As far as I am aware, Consumer Reports recommends every Toyota product (mainly based on reputation and exaggerated ownership reports). My sister now drives the new Volkswagen Jetta TDI and has not had a single issue. She's an IT specialist and often uses her car to travel from state to state for various projects etc. She DEPENDS on her car and so far the Jetta has not let her down. Even her previous car, before the Prius II, a Passat, was rock solid and reliable with the exception of a battery discharge over night early into her ownership.

Problems can pop up on any cars. I can deal with small issues and I won't run and cry my heart out to Consumer Reports the moment my cup holders break or there's a crack in my leather seats bla bla bla...

The yelping cries from the Honda faithful would be palpable if in fact the brand was being unfairly dinked using subjective standards.

But being blind loyal to a brand can only get you so far and is no excuse for not accepting reality that Honda has fallen from its leadership position.

Read my rant above here, I agree we shouldn't be brand loyal, I believe in being loyal to the best, and Honda is still a contender, but the competition is now competition for the first time maybe ever, and Honda has been beaten in some areas.
