General Motors Over Takes Toyota As Largest Automaker In First Half Of year
General Motors Co. outsold Toyota Motor Corp. globally in the first six months to become the world's largest automaker after the record March earthquake disrupted production in Japan.

GM sales rose 8.9 percent to 4.536 million units in the half-year ended June 30, the automaker reported Thursday.

That compares with 4.13 million units at second-ranked Volkswagen AG and 3.71 million units for Toyota, including its luxury Lexus brand and affiliates Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd., according to statements by the companies.

Hardly a lead when Japan was hit by a massive tsunami.

Last I checked, neither Toyota nor Honda were doing well in sales because of other merits besides a prior reputation for quality. Face it. The current Camry and Accord suck. Now we're hoping the 2012 Camry will save the day.

correct, look at what happened with Toyota, a decade of recall cover ups ended up destroying their sales once people started realizing what was going on.

The article does not break down the sales far enough to get an accurate picture of GM's turn around in sales. My guess is that GM had a tremendous amount of fleet sales; i.e. Malibu's & Cruze's to rental car companies along with financial incentives on the trucks.

I guess reading the couple paragraph article above was too much? It says right in the last line that Hino and other affiliates are included in the numbers.
