Toyota Shifts Gears, Will Build 2012 RAV4 EV in Canada
WOODSTOCK, Ontario — Toyota and EV development partner Tesla Motors have agreed to shift production of the upcoming RAV4 EV to Toyota's Ontario plant, rather than the former Toyota plant in California that Tesla acquired last year.
As part of a $100-million deal signed a year ago, Tesla will provide the battery, motor, gearbox and power electronics for the RAV4 EV, which originally was to have been built by Tesla in the former New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant in Fremont, California.
Now, Tesla will ship EV drive system components from another facility in Palo Alto to Toyota's Woodstock plant, which assembles conventional gasoline-engine RAV4s. Production of the RAV4 EV will begin in 2012.
