BMW 7-Series Under Investigation For Rollaways
U.S. safety regulators have opened an investigation into an estimated 120,000 BMW 7-series sedans for a potential issue with the car not shifting into park and then rolling away.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has opened a preliminary probe of the BMW cars from model years 2002 through 2008 after receiving a complaint that a 2006 model rolled away after the consumer parked and exited the vehicle.

Seems to me that news like this piece appear when the manufacturer accused of guilt, is about to embark upon or achieved success in something. Example Toyota is going to become #1, unintended acceleration issue. BMW stole top place in luxury segment, roll away problem. I'm not saying that the roll away issue is not true, its just weird how news like that surface up after an automakers success. To whom's benefit this is.....ahem Other Automakers maybe

My solution is how about using the emergency brake when you park on an incline.

This issue is for the last generation 7 series, so it has nothing current to do with current production.

The 2011 VW Jettas and Tdi's are under investigation for high pressure fuel leaks. Which is a little more current.

The investigation is based on one complaint, out of roughly 90k vehicles. How much would you like to bet that one instance was user error? Like, oh I don't know, forgetting to put it in park before turning it off and exiting the vehicle?

I think in the older gen 7 series the emergency brake is electronic, and I think it engages automatically after the car is parked, Im not sure though. My friend's 7 ran out of gas on the freeway near an exit and his friends and him tried to push it down the ramp, the brake turned on automatically and every time they tried to take the brake off it would turn back on.

M3owns: I agree in most of your points. You could be right, but if that is the case , the BMW engineers were very silly. Honestly I think, as in the Toyota case, I may think that most of this cases will be a misunderstanding of the technology for users. Also if it is electronic, I may think it is a BMW error cause in electronics the Japanesse still the "kings of the hills". But that won't be enough to stop the BMW success. USA trend to look for errors in the foreigners if they are not able to face the competition....I love that country but the way that they handle the Toyota case lead to stop or at least slow down their success. Now they could be gunned against the BMW and anything selling better than the American products. My Favorite Brand is MB but also BMW Audi and Cadillac but at the end the competition is what give us better products. USA will have to improve or die on the car industry. Of course they are doing a lot better but still not enough.

Well then tell the morons to shift it into park first. There is nothing wring with the car!! Fanned by ambulance chasers and the like, we're slowly becoming a nation of idiots. I picked up a ladder from home depot and it had stickers saying be careful when you climb or you may fall (think I'm kidding go over and see for yourself). You would think any 2 year old could have guessed that but that's what we need because people have stopped thinking....
