Is the Plymouth Prowler Really One of the 50 Worst Cars of All Time?
There are some things in life that go so well together that they are famous for being together; peanut butter and jelly, mac & cheese, burgers and fries and so on. Hot Rods and V8s go together just as well, ever seen a Hot rod without one? As a modern take on the Hot rod the Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler certainly had the styling to look like one, but lacked the horsepower and the requisite V8 to truly be one. For these and other reasons some saw the Prowler as a disappointment, Time magazine even rated it as one of its 50 worst cars of all time. With that in mind let's take a look at the Prowler's legacy and see what this unique vehicle was all about. We'll compare the Prowler to its contemporary competition in areas of styling, performance and value to see if it really deserves to be called one of the worst of all time.

What do you think, is the Prowler an iconic vehicle or does it truly deserve its 50 worst cars of all time ranking?

Completely true statement Blazinboy! Even though some ppl will see it other way around, why would you put money and time in a thing like this?
At the end of the day, what was the benefit of bulding a thing like this?
How many of them did they sold?

This was not nonsense and did Not lead to chryslers takeover. This was thinking out of the boring box. This was along the same line as the PT Cruiser that was never intended to be put into production but ended up selling over 1.3 million units. The Viper was never intended for production but it was received so well at the auto shows it happened. Isn't that what we car guys do at the auto shows, see something cool and different and then HOPE the manufactures follow through?

Sadly it did not perform. However lets hope all car makers have the guts to put cars like this and the SSR on the market. For many of us
cars are fun. There are too many conservatives in the industry
and too many brand snobs. There should be room for different strokes for different folks and more fun.

I agree it was a concept car for the street, bottomline they had the guts to do it and to me I think thats a good thing. If all that was made were conservative cars that made sense than we all would be driving camry and accords. So as 50 worst cars of all time far from, frankly if they had the engine lineup they had today this thing would have sold like hotcakes the Prowler with a Hemi V8, and improved interior sounds like an awesome car.

Disappointing yes, but not one of the worst cars. I'd gladly take one over 98% of the other bland cars on the road.

I wouldn't want one, but we need more stuff like the Prowler.

What is often forgotten (13-years after the fact) by Time magazine "journalists" who will next be assigned to cover a Linsey Lohan meltdown; is that the Prowler was an aluminun engineering exercise for Chrysler.

Aluminum stamping (body panels) Aluminum fastening (body-in-white) Aluminum forming/welding (frame) Aluminum suspension (casting).

So what do you put in as a powertrain? Your 30-year-old iron block V8 that makes 235 HP, or your latest all-aluminum 32v V6 that makes 255 HP? Duh. BTW, that's about the same HP of a mid-late 90s CamaroStang.

The whole car tipped the scales at a Lotus-like weight, with gigantic tires, and thus had incredible handling. So if the car was a "failure", it was only because it packaged up a light sportscar in the body of a primative hot-rod. If you disagree, ask the cop in Yarnell, AZ who was chasing me up the side of a mountain 10-years ago (and could still be looking for all I know).

Go back to covering celebu-tard meltdowns TimeMZ and leave complicated things, such as the wheeled machines you notice as you decend into the NYC subway, for the experts.

Really what ruined this car was having a V6 instead of a hemi V8. Other than that and cheap interior I love its styling and I am not an American car fan, but I wouldn't mind having one with a 5.7 hemi in it.

Yes, and I would like to have the time machine that allows you to install the 2005 Hemi into the 1998 Prowler.

Is poor reading comprehension the reason you're driving a 26-year-old car? Try reading two posts above.

No need for the insults because I propmise you If we were face to face you wouldn't be throwing insults at me. Moving on, I read everything and my opinion is the same. And that 26 year old car is one of the many cars I drive, it is a collectors item, as it was never sold by BMW in the united States, and is a grey market. 399 rear wheel hp and 496 lb/ft torque to the rear wheels on 98 octane fuel. And my reading comprehension is just fine, that's how I was able to mod it like that. I also have a 325es, a Land Rover Discovery II and a Mercedes ML350, and a Sleekcraft jet boat with a 454 big block Chevy in it. I was stating what I would like bottom line. I know the Hemi wasn't available back then and the only worthy V8 from Chrysler didn't have any more hp than the V6 so that wouldn't have made sense to use it. It made more sense to mix state of the art with state of the art. When I say I wouldn't mind having one with a 5.7l Hemi, I mean a conversion, you know like they do with Jeeps. I totally get the reason for the V6 but when you see a hot rod you hear the rumble of a V8. As much as it technically made sense it just isn't a hot rod without a V8.

How can you "propmise" me I wouldn't insult you to your face?

BTW, I've reported you and your gay-market BMW to the EPA.
