Is Aston Martin Trying To Squeeze Too Much Out Of Too Little?
Unlike Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Rolls-Royce – who are owned by highly successful mainstream brands Volkswagen, Audi, Fiat and BMW respectively – specialist manufacturers such as Aston Martin have a hard time in the market.
Whereas a company like Mercedes-Benz can afford to spend €5 billion (US$7.1 billion) in one year on research and development, the Gaydon-based manufacturer of performance/luxury coupes is planning its next models on the eight-year-old platform that first underpinned the DB9 coupe in 2003!

This article is funny especially since they are referencing Mercedes. How old is the platform that underpins the Mercedes SLS that just came out not that long ago?, how old is the platform in the "new" E class, the current Cayenne is based on the last one mind you much improved, Bentley Continental has been with us for how long now and just got a simple refresh, The Range Rover is still based on the last generation X5 are they really going to create a brand new everything for a limited volumve suv probably not,the list goes on and on yet they just focus on a small company like Aston Martin that builds what 3 or 4 cars?

wrong!!!!, the SLS is based on the current SL which has been with us almost a decade, second the e class is based on the same platform as the last e class which came out when?, your thinking about the c class fyi that got the new platform. My point still remains if company's that can afford the R&D cost of building new platforms and engines choose to modify their engines and same platforms why cant Aston Martin. You talk GM itis yet the VW group makes how many cars off how many platforms? Most of Acura's lineup is based on the Accord or the Civic, everything in the Infiniti lineup currently is based in some way on the 370z except the QX, the list goes on and on its called cost cutting its not just a GM thing and honestly not a bad idea. GM probably has more platforms and engines than many other manufacturers for the record.
