Why Have German Car Sales Remained So Strong When Everyone Else Is All Over The Place?

Why Have German Car Sales Remained So Strong When Everyone Else Is All Over The Place?

Stock markets may be crashing as investors panic, western economies totter on the brink of another recession, and the euro zone is close to collapse, but Germany and its premium car manufacturers sail serenely on.

European forecasters are scrambling to cut their forecast for car sales but all seem to add the caveat "not including BMW, Mercedes and Audi."

During the last recession, the big three Germans were not immune from harm, but they took the opportunity to take some hard decisions to cut costs and plan for the future. They didn't waste the crisis.

Rich becoming richer. Poor becoming poorer.
So at the upper end Mercedes and BMW setting records and earning record profits and on the lower end Hyundai and Kia doing the same. All in between are struggling.

+1 money doesn't just disappear whenever a depression hits. It just lines the pockets of the rich.

Hmmm, from what I've seen the auto market for everyone INCLUDING GM/Ford/Chrysler has been immune to the bad economy (thusfar). So this article is just more Euro-worship by another "journalist" trying to create a scary headline in the Detroit News.

For those who don't know, the Detroit News/Free Press is basically just a 4-times-a-week newsletter and coupon folder. Their stories are about as relevant in 2011 as the Dumont TV network.

incorrect. german car prices are going UP. bmw just announced huge across the board increses, for example.

a number of reasons:

1. a renewed focus on design among german manufacturers
2. incredible number of high-quality new models
3. continuous improvement of current models with very substantial refreshes
4. a wealthier average buyer who's less likely to downgrade cars because their income or assets dropped a bit

the article is primarily citing premium german manufacturers....audi, mercedes and bmw. and all three are doing extraordinarily well. largely because of the reasons i've cited. why do others think they're doing well if you don't agree with me?

Hue... did you know the largest English speaking country in the world is? China, yes China has the largest English speaking bunch in the world, and Ellard, I believe that Asia, China in particular is un creative mostly because it is in there culture not to stand out, when they study it is more of a memory test than anything as opposed to thinking out side of the box and being creative, although I wish my parents pushed education like China does, they are way ahead of us slackers in North America, they take great pride in being smarter than other countries to prove that they are superior, seriously, this is what I have heard from many of my Chinese friends.

In the art world the smaller artists that make art from $2,000.-$5,000. don't sell much, artists selling more expensive art are doing great because the rich will get richer, just like the expensive cars.
