Can YOU Spot The Change In This Large Premium Sedan Model Share Chart?
Well, numbers don't lie.

Although people may have dismissed the Porsche Panamera for its hind quarters, it seems to be getting a lot of attention. And it's not just attention, it's driving HUGE sales for Porsche. But that's not the best part, looking at data recently collected by Polk, it is pretty clear how much of an impact the Panamera has had on the large premium sedan market.

Because of the Panamera, there is a large slice of the pie missing!

Compared to five years ago, the Maserati Quattroporte, Lexus LS, BMW 7-Series and Audi A8 are all seeing declines in market share. According to the stats, the Panamera is behind the 1) Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2) BMW 7-Series 3) Lexus LS. Considering it's so new, that's impressive. Clearly the vehicles suffering the most bleeding are the Lexus LS and Mercedes S-Class.

Another car making an impressive jump is the all-new Jaguar XJ. If you look to the stats from years back, it has more than doubled its market share in a short period of time.

Here's the kicker though. When I drove the six-cylinder Panamera I proclaimed it was my favorite one. Well, I guess others saw how impressive the standard Panamera was because it is commanding a staggering 46 percent of the six-cylinder, large premium sedan segment.

pretty surprising figures because to me the porche only fits in this category with pricing, otherwise i cant really imagine a 65 year old wanting one, its not like a real luxury sedan like the others, its way sportier.

i drove a panamera 4 last week and was shocked how perfect it felt for just a 6 cylinder..

im lookin forward to see how the fisker karma does in the next 5 years ( also same pricing and offers something special to the segment )

"Well, I guess others saw how impressive the standard Panamera was because it is commanding a staggering 46 percent of the six-cylinder, large premium sedan segment."

aren't there only a couple of six-cylinder, large premium sedans in the segment? There's the Panamera V6, the BMW 740, and... uh... that's it, unless you count the S400 hybrid. Am I missing any? Unless I'm missing a vehicle, if the Panamera has 46% of the segment then the 740 has the other 54%, am I right?

I had a 2004 XJR, loved it and after 125,000 great miles, in 2010, cross shopped the new Panamera 4S and the "new" XJR; I went for the Panamera and frankly, it is an epic achievement! To the detractors of its "looks" I can only laugh: despite its great "presence" on the street -- certainly as opposed to the same ol' rectangles with evolving brand cues and flames out there -- I ask; since when have Porsches been so critically assessed for their "looks"? If that were the test, the original "bathtub" (not meant as a compliment then) would not have made it. Rather, Porsches poses "other" qualities, and judged by those, the Panamera trumps its playmates in virtually every category including, surprisingly, interior! 0-60 in 4.4 with ultra low emissions, 650 mile range and no gas guzzler tax, killer brakes and handling? Epic achievement.
I'm 61 by the way, in reference to the first comment, and "sold" one to a neighbor who is ditching his MB and is 10 years older (but I have kept my 71 Mach 1 --I know, not a car for the purists -- for the reasonable fear back then that performance was dying: that didnt happen, but now its a habit; however, I dont drive it much after the above two cars caome home with me!)

Had my doubts about the V6 Pan until I drove it- VERY fun car.

But with most options it's well North of 100k- for that kind of cash I'd still prefer a 750 M-sport.............much classier IMO.
