HARDCORE Showdown: Porsche's 911 GT3 RS 4.0 vs. Audi's R8 GT, WHICH and WHY?

HARDCORE Showdown: Porsche's 911 GT3 RS 4.0 vs. Audi's R8 GT, WHICH and WHY?
If you take a superficial look at both of these vehicles, you'll notice there are some common traits.

1) They're both the most hardcore forms of each respective model

2) Both are sporting large rear wings

3) Both specifically are built with weight reduction in mind

4) Both have carbon ceramic, big brake kits

and

5) Both are equally stunning to look at

BUT, they each yield their own personality and charisma. As much as the R8 GT and GT3 RS 4.0 are the same, they are miles apart. From the rear engine layout of the 911 to the mid-engine set up in the R8, to the old-school-inspired 911 to the new-age R8, to the V10 in the GT to the six-cylinder in the 911, there are significant differences that will provide a different experience.

The question is: WHICH one would you take home and WHY?

R8 GT for me. Looks better, more exclusive, 90% of driving will be on street.

actually, it is a little more exclusive... I believe production figures are 333 vs. 600... thats where the exclusivity part comes in...

I cannot choose, but if I were a hardcore enthusiast who plans to track the car, then the GT3 RS, hands down. The R8 GT is a super performer, but the GT3 is king, the BEST!

If I were cruising, I would probably go with the R8 GT, because its got a much more eye-catching look.

Porsche, its a better drivers car, and look awesome. The R8 looks bad with that wheel and paint combo.

R8 GT, that way I wouldn't be driving a car that looks like a $50,000 vehicle with a home installed tuner kit.

50K car with home tuner kit? I think you may be the only person who thinks that way...

Does the 911 not look like the Cayman? You can pick up a cayman for $50,000. As to the kit part of that comment, open your eyes lol, unpainted hood, rear spoiler made with waterjet aluminum sheetmetal uprights and just to top it off, a side skirt kit lol.

sorry got confused for a second there, the unpainted hood is on the gt2 rs lol

for me, the you-don't-know-what-model-year-you're-driving-styling of the 911 is what is boring. Modernizing can do wonders, like it is doing for Jaguar (at least in the styling category).

Not a fan of the R8, it’s just a bargain bin supercar like the NSX was, get the Porsche or a Ferrari 458 for the real deal.

with over 100 wins in GT racing thus far in only a few years since its intro, the R8 GT is THE car to own over the old-school, boring style, best-just-got-trumped-by-the-R8 911. The styling of the R8 is striking anywhere you go and cannot be confused with ANYTHING on the road, much less any of the 1,000 variations of lesser 911s. As a daily driver hands down as well.

Porsche was simply an easy target as it stood still on its 911, offering tweeks here and there and never any revolutionary changes or upgrades. The 911's are awesome to look at and drive, but they have been clearly been outdone by the R8.

How about the 1000's of victories 911's have had in just about every form of GT racing....The R8 can be confused with a $35k TT. Plus the R8 looks dated already when compared to the Ferrari 458, McLaren, and the newer version of the timeless 911. The R8 had its 15 minutes of fame in 2008, now it struggles to stands out.

hold on up a second bucko. True the Porsche may have lots of victories, but that took decades of placing more cars into every race then every other automotive competitor. If this R8, or any other of Porsche's competitors were entered into as many races as the 911 they would have a very comparable track record. Furthermore, how can you say the R8 looks dated compared to the 911 with a straight face? lol!

“If this R8, or any other of Porsche's competitors were entered into as many races as the 911 they would have a very comparable track record.”

Theoretically, but that’s all its is.... Porsche actually went out and did it, there is no need to speculate. I think the R8 looks dated, but then again I was never really a fan of its design.

So are you in a round about way trying to say that you'd choose the Porsche, not for any direct technical merit it has, but more because of a general need to fit into a social cliche?

If you're going to argue for the Porsche, you'd be far better off offering performance specification then saying, "I choose Porsche cause they are popular!"

NO, im not trying to say anything you just suggested, and nothing i said above would indicate that.

Im saying directly I like the porsche b/c I think it looks better, and its a better engineered vehicle IMO.

both of you guys are retarded... Just because you think one is better than the other does not mean that the other is crap. Obviously neither of you know good cars when you see them. They are both excellent cars that both of you would would be happy to own either...

So instead of picking one and bashing the other, how about just picking one because of the merits and not degrade the other. Im sure the one you did not pick is better than the POS you are driving currently.

Sorry, I was being an ass, of course you wouldn't be trying to admit to that. If anything, you'd try to hiding this fact. However, mentioning Porsche's racing career doesn't really say anything about its engineering. Sure it hints at it, but why hint at it when you can cite specific examples like Porsche's PDK, variable length exhaust, the incredible power/displacement ratio out of a n/a engine, etc etc etc.

Stating that Porsche has the deeper racing history therefore it is better engineered is simply flawed logic. You're doing the correlation implies causation mistake.

WOW, really? My mentioning porches racing history was in response to Meanvulcans fanboy rant(which you are apparently ok with) where he is suggested the R8 was superior b/c it had 100 GT wins. While neglecting the fact Porsche has and much more impressive record. This also has nothing to do with my comment where I stated IMO Porsche is better engineered.

You just said the Porsche is the better engineered vehicle the only evidence that you provided to support this argument is a reference to their victories lol!

Honestly, what did you expect combining "its a better engineered vehicle" with "How about the 1000's of victories 911's have had in just about every form of GT racing"

I said its a better engineered IN MY OPINON, which doesn’t mean I have to back it up I’m just stating my opinion. You should work on your reading comprehension.

MersedezSL, I know the truth hurts, specially when it only took Audi one model to overcome the decades of 911s winning in GT. If you look at wins per entry, the R8 is a better car. Having won the 24hrs of Spa just makes it sweeter. After more than 100 wins in only 1.5 to 2 years this is statistically significant. I never said the 911 is a bad car, hell, I would take one if you give it to me. But if I had a choice, I would take the R8, because that is a better driver's car IMO, it is lightweight, it is mid-engined, its styling is modern (unlike the caveman styling of the 911-I like the 911 but I don't fall in the diehard Porsche fan category where I ignore styling...after how many decades the 911 styling has not changed much). The R8 has both things going for it. Styling, racing pedigree. period. I know this disturbs the status quo, but I'm not one to follow the crowd.

That sounds nice and all Vulcan, but your biased rants are hard to be taken seriously, and ultimately does not make the R8 better than the 911 ... We will just have to agree to disagree.

Porsche, leave the graphics off, please.

it seems to me, the Audi has arrived... and well ahead of the 911 based on most head to head competitions since the R8 arrived. Heritage may be a valid claim, but kinda worthless when you are clearly beaten on every performance number that counts, from quality, racing, performance, styling, you name it. The R8 has won Car of the Year, Sports Car of the Year, numerous GT races, Spa 24hrs, beat just about everything it was compared to with similar capabilities, Best Design of the Year, Audi now ranks as best customer service and most improved in quality, should I really go on?

Porsche is a great car but I do not like that they have rested on their laurels, enhanced the same car over the years and never really revolutionaized it. The formula had worked until the R8. This is why reliability is so high on 911's... its the same car it was 30 years ago - you would hope they found and fixed all the bugs.

I've read nothing here factual that hints at debunking these facts.

Maybe when comparing the 4.2 R8 to the 911, but the V10 R8 is inferior to the 911 turbo, and Nissan GTR. Both of which have beaten the R8 V10 numerous times.

How many wins did Porsche accumulate over the past couple years? I know the 911 just won the Nurburgring 24.

Why this exercise in mental masterbation? Both are nice cars that most of the respondents have never seen in person let alone driven. It really comes down to buyer preference. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.
