US Built Maserati SUV To Debut At Frankfurt Motor Show Next Month
Maserati, the maker of the $120,250 Quattroporte driven by rock star Bono, is betting that Italian luxury can also be a made-in-Detroit SUV.

The elite car brand, based in Modena, Italy, plans to build its first sport-utility vehicle at Chrysler Group LLC’s Jefferson North assembly plant, said a person familiar with the matter. A concept version of the model, which will be based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, is due to be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show next month, said the person, who declined to be identified before the official announcement.

If Porsche can base their SUV on a "VW", I see no issue with Maserati basing their SUV on the same chassis as uh hem the Mercedes ML.........

You are on Crack or are so biased that you are blind if you think the Grand Cherokee has always been better than the Land Rover. For Starters all of them except for the newest one has had horrifically cheap interior, and swayed left to right on the highway like it were fish tailing, were very unstable, especially at highway speeds, and none were ever as capable offroad as the Land Rover. I used to pull them and other American SUV's out with My Discovery II because they would always get stuck spinning one front tire and one back tire with their open differentials and only LSD in the rear. Mine always spun all four which explained how mine with high performance directional summer sport tires went places American 4x4's with mud tires couldn't go, especially when it comes to rock crawling. Mine can rock crawl in stock trim. You have to buy a rear diff lock before you can even think about climbing small rocks in a Cherokee. The new Cherokee is certainly an equal and worthy competitor to the Land Rover, but no other Cherokee prior even came close. And how ironic that the New Cherokee is a Mercedes ML underneath the Skin. Chryslers ad campaign should be "Imported to Detoit" judging by how many of them are actually built in the U.S. If I were shopping for a Domestic SUV the current Cherokee wold easily be my number one choice Thanks to Fiat getting Chrysler to buid decent interiors for the first time in the car makers history.

Maserati can't build a sedan that people care about (Ferrari engine not withstanding) What makes them think people would care about their suv?

I could never figure out how the Quattroporte didn't' succeed. It has a gorgeous interior and that engine sounds spectacular. I would take it over an S class or 7 series any day. Its having an exotic hot rod and luxury car in one. Especially the GTS with its muffler bypass baffles. Proof you can occasionally have your cake and eat it.
