RUMOR: BMW's Next-Gen 3-Series To Get Three Trims?
Along the lines of Audi and its packaging playbook, it seems that BMW is going to be offering its next-generation 3-Series in three different types of trim.

Although these are merely rumblings at this point, speculation has the trims named the Sport Line, Modern Line and Luxury line. But don't be surprised to hear if that changes to something else, or the Sport Line, Urban Line and Deluxe Line.

Hell, maybe even BMW will bestow the Sport Line sDrive35is xDrive 335i upon us.

These optional lines will feature differentiated preset looks via unique trimmings and equipment. Besides the usual options and packages BMWs can be configured with, this allows BMW to offer even more individuality and uniqueness between the same models. These lines should not be offered to the exclusion of the traditional M-sport package or potential Performance Edition (which the recently spied F20 1-series performance edition possibly hints at).

How will the 3 lines differ? No solid details yet, but we assume they will feature different aspects such as wheels, mirror covers, interior trims, exterior trims and accents and/or keyfobs. Performance differences may also not be out of the question...

Well, Go to BMWUSA.com and look at the X5 3.5i xdrive. It has 3 different trim levels for the past 2 years of production. They listened to the consumer surveys of the most frequently purchased and demanded options and packaged them together. Foe people who dont want all of those tech options and creature features, you can get the base model. So, it will most likely mimmick the X5 trim packaging. I would think it would be more for the 328 vs the 335 because there are more 328's on the road than 335's, based purely on price point.
I think it is a good idea because why pay for something you are not going to use? Of course, it does confuse people when packaging changes year to year, but so does consumer demand.

The issue with that is limiting choice. Say I want the basic trim, but with something simple added as tinted windows. No-can't do, I'd have to spring for the next trim and pay more for things I don't particularly care for in the least. This also changes one of the important aspects of luxury, customization. If I am to spend more money on a car shouldn't I be able to get the car I want? BMW used to push new customers to order their ultimate driving machine exactly the way they like it instead of picking the demo one off the lot. Now they are lowering the customer experience to a level similar to everyday brands.
